If I buy an "open box" monitor from Newegg, am I basically asking for dead pixels?

I'm monitor shopping and am considering getting an open box monitor from Newegg, but I'm wondering if this is a stupid move. Is an open box monitor on Newegg pretty much guaranteed to be one that was returned because of dead pixels?

I can't really think of too many other reasons someone would return a monitor...

or maybe it has really bad back light bleed.

either way, i'd pass. i say no to open box anything on newegg. you never know what kind of n00b had his grubby paws all over the stuff before you!

I've bought several open box motherboards and videocards from Newegg. I had one bad motherboard, which I sent back and they promptly refunded my money. So out of probably 8 board, one bad, not too bad.

Having said that, yeah, a monitor, I would probably pass. I know a lot of people who return monitors just because of ghosting or image quality or whatever, but there's probably 2-3 times as many who return them for dead pixel issues.

If the monitor had any of those problems it would have been returned to the manufacture. Open bax is items that have been returned but where not defective. You would be surprised the number of people who buy things and return them even though they are not defective.

Depending on their dead pixel policy, the monitor might not be deemed "defective" though. If it only has one or two, the original buyer probably returned it and ate the 15% restocking fee.
