Bleh, those have been attributed to Quayle and Gore as well. Quayle actually said a good many of them, but most of them are Urban Legends.

I read alot of those several years ago, and Entity is right. At the time they were attributed to Quayle. But they are still funny.

Please. Al Gore, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton....they've all said really STUPID things. You just have to look for them.

The media loves to paint some people as stupid (Dan Quayle anyone?) when in fact all politicians (and really all people) say stupid things. You just have to know where to look.

Anyone see the 1998 Vice-Presidential debates? Al Gore had his clock cleaned by Quayle. People still today think though, that Quayle is stupid because the media wanted him to look that way.

So you're telling us you're a perfect public speaker, you've never minced your words in front of an audience? Have you ever spoken to an audience of thousands, plus millions behind TV cameras?

Have you ever ran a state? If not, STFU.

It doesn't matter who said them, or what office they're in. They're human.

Not to mention these people are speaking in public over and over again ... I mean three to four times a day almost every day. Anyone can screw up when you have that many speaches infront of that many people .. heck I say stupid stuff all the time .. luckily no one chases me with a recorder.

It's not the fact that what George W. said was stupid, that makes this pathetic. It's the fact that his grasp of the English language is so poor, he just cannot form a cohesive sentence that reflects his intent. He is making grammatical mistakes, plain and simple. Now, being in Canada where our Prime Minister is expected to be fluent in both English and French, I can just laugh j/k;) Actually, it is quite funny. If I were George W. I'd probably get some tutoring. When you talk that much in public you should get good at what you're doing. The fact that he has speechwriters makes matters worse because he's obviously not memorizing his speeches properly and then doesn't have the grammatical sense to ad lib parts of the speech he forgets.

Are you just dense this morning? All politicians speak under tremendous pressure. Until you've had a conversation with him in his own home, discussing a mutually important topic, you have no room to talk. One's ability to form sentences under the glare of the spotlight & millions of eyes is more a reflection on their public speaking prowess than their grasp of a language. I hate public speaking, & felt lucky to get a B out of it, but I'd say I have an above average grasp of the English language.

Yeah, Gore is a better choice because he's a better public speaker.;)

Connecticut River is raised 8 inches for Gore "rowboat" photo-op; "Environmentalist" Veep wastes 4 billion gallons, worth $7.1 million

WASHINGTON (July 23) - What's it take to float Vice President Al Gore's boat? 4 billions of water, that's what - at a cost of more than $7.1 million. All for a good cause, however (at least according to the "environmentalist" Vice President), since it provided Gore a photo-opportunity to highlight a $100,000 grant to the Connecticut River Joint Commission.

According to The Washington Times and The Associated Press, the Secret Service and the Connecticut River Joint Commission directed Pacific Gas & Electric to unleash approximately 4 billion gallons of water yesterday into the Connecticut River so Gore's rowboat wouldn't get stuck during a 4-mile photo opportunity. The release of the 4 billion gallons from a dam upstream raised the level of the river by 8 to 10 inches, and has drawn the ire of environmental officials in the region.

February 20, 2000; New York Times
CLAIM: Gore said he has ?always, always, always? supported Roe v. Wade.
TRUTH: In 1977, Rep. Gore voted for the Hyde Amendment, which says that abortion ?takes the life of an unborn child who is a living human being,? and that there is no constitutional right to abortion. He cast many other votes favorable to the pro-life cause and earned an 84 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee.

Gore on Tobacco

Gore Tells an Emotional Story About His Sister?s 1984 Death from Lung Cancer?

"When I was a child, my family was attacked by an invisible force that was then considered harmless. My sister Nancy was older than me. There were only the two of us. And I loved her more than life itself. She started smoking when she was 13 years old. The connection between smoking and lung cancer had not yet been established. But years later, the cigarettes had taken their toll. It hurt very badly to watch her savaged by that terrible disease. Her husband Frank and all of us who loved her so much tried to get her to stop smoking."

"Tomorrow morning, another 13-year-old girl will start smoking. I love her too. 3,000 young people in America will start smoking tomorrow. 1,000 of them will die a death not unlike my sister's. And that is why until I draw my last breath, I will poor pour my heart and soul into the cause of protecting our children from the dangers of smoking." (Al Gore, The Democrat National Convention, 8/28/96)

?Four Years After His Sister?s Death From Cancer

?"Throughout most of my life, I raised tobacco,? the Tennessee senator hollered. ?I want you to know that with my own hands, all of my life, I put it in the plant beds and transferred it. I've hoed it, I've dug in it, I've sprayed it, I've chopped it, I've shredded it, spiked it, put it in the barn and stripped it and sold it.?" ([New York] Newsday, 2/26/88)

As an aside - there is no George W. Bush, Jr., our President was George Herbert Walker Bush. I can see you like to keep things real "factual" so I wanted to pass that along.

Funny you should say that. William F Buckley Jr. commended GWB for high use of the English language.

A little more Bushwit:

One of the common denominators I have found is that expectations rise above that which is expected.
Los Angeles, Sept. 27, 2000

It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas.
Beaverton, Ore., Sep. 25, 2000

Sheesh!!! We have to start manufacturing more of our imports, here! If we don't get a grip on this one, pretty soon all of our imports will come from foreign countries. :p

Calm down man...I'm not the one that's dense here!;) Look at some of the quotes. They are blatantly contradictory. I've seen a great deal of talent-lacking public speakers, and while the majority of these speakers may have lacked charisma and confidence, none of them blatantly contradicted themselves in the course of a single sentence - over and over and over again. Having had the opportunity to speak in front of university lecture halls, on TV and for newspaper reporters, I've never minced up my words to the extent George W. has - and given an audience of strangers I'm an introvert.

I would contest the minute significance that Americans now place on the public-speaking abilities of their leaders, but I'm sure I would be flamed. Just remember that your only contact with your president will be via public speeches. If they cannot communicate their intentions, how are you to know what their intentions truly are? Now, George W. tends to screw up whenever he is asked a question whose answer has not been scripted for him, or when asked a question whose answer was scripted for him but he forgot what it was. You can only blame these screw-ups on immense pressure of being in the spotlight, for oh so long. After a while, one should get used to the pressure of the "spotlight" and not be so nervous - and consequently, not make these types of mistakes.

Now, don't think I'm a Gore supporter (I'm Canadian so technically I cannot "support" either candidate). But Gore comes across as a serial liar. He too, screws up his answers. But rather than being out of innocent ignorance, as is the case with George W., Gore's "screw-ups" come out of calculated manipulations of the truth. Whichever candidate's method is better was up to the American public to decide - and I pity you for having to make such a difficult decision with such a crappy outcome, either way it turns out:)

Good God,

After looking through Bobberfett's link, I came across this quote (amongst numerous others):

<< "A zebra does not change its spots." - Al Gore, attacking President George Bush in 1992. >>

I now have come to the conclusion that both candidates are complete duds and am wondering why all Americans aren't scrambling to have a completely new election with completely new candidates;)
