Volkswagen sells cars like that in the U.S., and their U.S. division isn't profitable either.

Nice try though, Mr. Arm Chair CEO :p

No doubt. There are a lot of European cars that I wish were sold here. Its too bad these European manufacturers don't realize the huge market there is over here if they took a chance.

And when you finished driving the car you can turn it into a greenhouse.

I wonder how you block out the sun.

If GM want's to return to profitability, they need to start making more than a couple hundred bucks on a car and start making a couple thousand a car like Toyota manages to do and still manage to keep it desireable and reliable.

What? Why would you want that?
Then again, you drive an xB right now, don't you? I guess that explains it :p

I just can't abide the xB... it's just TOO boxy, and I hate the whole concept of putting the gauges in the center of the dash. And I don't have anything against hatchbacks, for example, this one looks better. I guess it's all about proportions and lines.

Opels are good cars. FYI, GM sold Opels in the US market through the 60s until 1975. Models were the Kadet (econobox), Manta (sporty coupe), and GT (literally looked like a miniature Corvette). All were powered by the same unique 1.9L cam-in-head inline 4cyl. making 110 hp (a respectable hp # for an economy 4cyl in those days). Front-engine RWD too. Unfortuately, sales were low and the cars had a rather poor reliability reputation.

GM still sells Opels in the US today, but rebranded under the Saab name. Opel Vectra = Saab 93

the problem that GM has is actually with their workforce (unions, pension liabilities, etc)

if they dont have these problems, GM is actually a quite profitable company

I hate to break the bubble but GM had a Net Income of $2.8 billions(give or take) last year.
From what I was taught in Accounting, + in Net Income = Profit.

take further look where that net income came from.

there are two parts of GM: GM motors and GMAC

GM motors actually sells cars, GMAC is a financial company

GMAC is the one that is extremely profitable

corporate finance guys jokingly say GM is a finance company, not a car company

OK, they still had a Net Income of 1.2 billion for Automotive.
My accounting memory still tell me that +1.2 billion = Profit.
Just remember the title is If GM wants to to start returning to profitablility
