If Dilbert's boss is so incompetent, how did he become a manager?

Because Dilbert was written by a person who works in a cubicle, not a manager. Most cubicle workers see their bosses in the light of "he should have made this decision... it would be the most beneficial thing for the customer." Most bosses think in the "if I do this will it maximize profits?" kind of thinking. It's very rarely that the two sets of thinking agree, so cubicle workers think that their bosses are idiots, hence the PHB in Dilbert.

<--- ex-cubicle worker. Sadly (funnily?) I've found about half the comics in dilbert have come true for me personally. I think it's funny that every dilbert comic written was based on a letter that someone sent in to </me is having a brain fart, I should know the writers name> the comic creator.

EDIT: Scott Adams. Name popped into my head as soon as I hit submit

Better to make them a manager than let them constantly screw up at the lower levels where the real work is done. They did that with my boss.

You rise to the level of your incompetence.

In other words, if you're good at your job you get promoted out of it. Sooner or later you'll get promoted to a job you suck at.

Oh, another thing I forgot... I forget the name, but it's a theory that many people have about the promotion system... you're promoted until your incompetence keeps you from being promoted anymore. Hence, where you end up is always 1 step higher than you should be on the corporate ladder.

EDIT: AAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Get out of my mind Pipboy!!! :Q:Q:Q:confused::confused::confused:

also, I've thought that at medium to larger sized companies, the mediocre people who stick around become middle level managers simply from seniority.

Have an idiot at work, promote them..... seriously. That is how most companies work. They promote bad workers, so they don't screw up the "real" work.

From the book "the dilbert principal"

You promote incompetent people up until they reach a level where they can do no harm. The competent people are left at the ground level doing the work while the incopetent people get promoted so they can't screw up the work. At least thats what he said.

Personaly my boss makes his decisions based on one question: What % chance is there that this will come back and bit me in the backside.

I work for the Federal Govt, and its almost impossible to fire a full time employee. To get rid of one that is useless, a jerk, or a moron they promote them. And there is your solution
