Most of you folks so very used to the routines of the daily life in an organized setupm but all of us overlook the fact that the collapse of that structure could result in devastation for us.

For example:

You are used to shopping at stores. whether brick and mortar or online. Now imagine a war/tornado/earthquake/hurricane comes about and renders the distribution network of retail trade useless leading to no such more stores anymore.

Would you survive such a situation? Can you scavenge for food from nature eg. hunting or would you simply die of hunger?

I hunt humans and eat their flesh at least once a week so that I'm prepared for a descent into cannibalism. I'll be fine without supermarkets.

I have several months of dried foods stockpiled, my family owns a small farm, and I have lots of seed for a garden.

On top of that, my family are avid hunters, we get at least 1 deer every season. Firearms, ammo, and places to hunt are not an issue.

So, we're talking about New Orleans, not Judgement Day complete with terminators, right? I'd probably live, assuming I wasn't killed in whatever collapsed civilization (though that's a big assumption).

People always have these preparedness fantasies. But it would end up being mostly a matter of chance whether or not you were outright killed in the initial chaos or were murdered by highwaymen for your supplies or so they could rape your wife. I live in a sparsely populated area...so I guess that would mean I'd be slightly better off than some one in a more populated area as far as avoiding violent crazies. I doubt I'd do that great of job living off the land though. I'd probably flee up north to my father in laws, but even the small population up there is heavily dependent on food, fuel and equipment trucked in from elsewhere.

My favorite is when people say "I have a rifle and a hobby farm! I'll be fine." As if the unwashed masses of violent starving people will stop at the no trespassing sign next to their farm property line and say "Oh nuts! No trespassing? I guess I'll just starve to death outside this fence then." Those fuckers will come and kill you and steal your food, or you'll run out of ammunition shooting them and then they'll still kill you and steal your food.

depends...if i can make it out of indianapolis, through kokomo, and through south bend to my parents lake house i might have a chance.

plenty of fish and freshwater, but we'd need to stock up on shotgun shells.

i'm guessing that i wouldn't make it up there though. it is a PITA to make it through kokomo on a good day.

Have you ever been in a rural area? A really rural area, where you have to drive for miles down dirt roads, through areas where most of the people are related, and have been knowing each other for decades.

There is a difference between living on a farm that is on a major highway, and a farm that is miles off the beaten path.

One of my favorite survivalist sites - http://www.survivalistboards.com/

I like to think that my family is prepped for a disaster, including a long term disaster.

Food
Water
Shelter
Security

We have the basics covered, plus some.

I built my pit with a total shtf situation in mind. If we get a wold hog or deer, we have the ability to cook it or smoke the meat.

I've already figured I don't want to live in a "Mad Max" world. I just wouldn't look good in leather and spikes. Has anyone read Dies the Fire? technology stops working and everyone gets medieval.

Most people would probably die, long term.

If most of the population is still alive in the early days of the collapse, there are going to be massive food and water shortages, which will lead to a lot of death from both lack of sustenance and fighting. This is the key time to have your own personal stash of food and bottled water. Not having to scrounge early on raises your chances of living considerably, at least for a while.

Assuming you had a stockpile or you were one of the winners of the food wars, you've made it a couple months. Let's say that infrastructure (electricity and fuel) are gone and they aren't coming back. You need to get somewhere that offers 4 things:
- Easily accessible clean fresh water
- Climate that supports growing most foods and raising livestock
- Defensible boundaries
- Enough people to collect water, tend to a farm, cook/clean, and defend what you've got

Just these 4 things are hard enough, but you also have to get there if you weren't lucky enough to be living in a prime location. This is going to kill a majority of the people left, either from exertion, exposure, starvation, or murder on the open road.

Assuming you make it to a prime location that isn't already taken and you have the willing manpower to maintain your food, water, and safety, you have to basically restart a small society. You'll need to set up some sort of rudimentary government (even if it's just democratic vote on each issue) so that decisions can be made without chaos. You'll need to setup a law system to try and punish crime in your society. You'll have to come up with a growth plan to expand your borders to handle new births and immigrants (if you decide to accept them). You'll need to find someone trained in medicine to manage the health of your population. Hopefully this person knows how to create basic antibiotics - otherwise your population will die from common infections that were just an afterthought before the collapse.

There's a lot more you'll need to do to survive long term, but that's the basic idea. Everyone thinks they could make it with a gun and their know-how, but long term survival depends on a lot more than you and your own badassery. It's not just a coincidence that average life expectancy has increased dramatically with the growth of society and our bonds to one another. We take a lot for granted.

Yep, all your stockpiled weapons and food won't mean shit if you were caught while away and couldn't get to it. Your chances in rural areas will be much greater but good luck if you're in a large metropolitan area.

At this point you shouldn't be sticking around and watching the descent into chaos. Use your preparedness to your advantage and get the hell of dodge while the gettins good.
