...measured in miles, what would you expect it to be? For a decent car. In other words what should the manufacturer CLAIM the car can do without problem (no major failures). 150k miles? More? Less?

I know of no car which can go 150k miles without some form of failure. Whether it is the battery dying or the tires needing replacement, it'll be a failure. I assume you mean "Mean miles before major failure" though.

Oh and there is already such a measurement, search for MDBF (D for distance).

I have a 98 camry, a very reliable car. It had a failed oil sender at 40K miles, so you just never know about small yet disabling things. if I had not smelled it, it would have pumped all the oil out in an hour or so of driving.
