If buying an LCD online, which manufacturers pack their merchandise well?

I had bought an LCD monitor from Newegg last week, I picked it up Monday...And of course it had a nice spiderweb crack in the center of the screen. 🙁

The piercing, as the photo shows, didn't strike me as being big enough that it could have caused the damage that it did until I took it out of the box.

There was good protection for the sides of the monitor, it didn't move; However, there was perhaps a 1mm thick foam bag protecting the screen itself, and little else. And it happened to have less distance from the edge of the box than the back as well.

I'm not looking to bash Newegg or even the manufacturer of the monitor, I suppose I'm not enthralled with Fedex ATM though..

Good news: Looks like Newegg is stepping up and starting a damage claim with Fedex. (fingers crossed)

Bad news: It'll be 7-10 business days to find out what happens for certain.

Needless to say, I asked for a refund.

Though that's not my question here...

If I were to look at getting something comprable to what I was going to get online, which brand manufacturers have some better padding/protection for the screens?

How might Dell's packaging for their LCD's fare, as well as some others? (Samsung, CTX, etc)

I suppose if worst does come to worst, I can pick one up locally--I'll be inspecting it before I leave the store however.

Dell has been good with LCD packaging IME...

They're usually better about it than UPS though...But stuff like this still slips through now and then for everyone.

Dell's packaging for my 1901FP was much more than adequate.... it could have gone through a warzone and not gotten hurt.

Am I guessing that Dell uses foam rubber for padding, in addition to styrofoam?

They had used foam rubber when I've bought hard drives from them in the past. (when they were on special)

yah dells packaging is a lot better. my 1703fp was laid down inside the box (the stand and the lcd were not attacked) and it was covered with styrofoam, manuals, cables, etc.

maybe it cause dell sells a lot more and packages better.

and also they ship so many monitors each day, there should be no problems, when there is a problem, they replace it. free.

Dell 1905FP or 2005FPW are the best bargains, wait for another hot deal.

The 1905FP for $251 was smokin hot!

My 1900FP, 1905FP, 2000FP and 2005FPW were all packaged quite well.

from the bottom up, dell 2005 has about a half inch thick piece of styrofoam with the middle cut out. the monitor cradles into that, with the screen facing up. then there is another piece of styrofoam that supports the stand. and then another piece of styrofoam on top of that. the packaging looks quite secure. i suppose a puncture to the bottom that was hard enough could pierce the housing of the monitor, but i doubt it. i think theres a nice piece of steel at the back of the monitor.

I just wonder if the 1900/1905's are good for mobile lan gaming...I know response time is something of a marketing gimmick, but looking to avoid ghosting is still a valid point.

I wonder when the next set of deals start from them.

Good...If it makes the UPS/Fedex soccer/hockey wannabes' goal to mess up the monitor more difficult, so much the better.

i dont have 1905 myself (have 3 at work still sealed but thats another story) but i have 2 2001fp i can say ghosting isnt that noticeable

If mobile gaming is important for you, then the Shuttle LCD would be handy, since it has a built in handy. Or you could go for a samsun 172x, very very small bezel and the stand folds in so everything is very compact.

You just got unlucky. The FedEx guy probably got dumped by his gf for his best friend. Nobody double boxes LCDs.

RMA or Call Newegg up, they should take care of the problem.

..got my 19" Sceptre and 30" Sceptre from costco.com and both showed up in double cartons intact no damage. 🙂

If you're an avid gamer then I would take a look at the Samsung SyncMaster 930B. The 1905FP has been $100 less but people claim there is noticeable ghosting on the 1905FP.

An update:

I just received an email update from Newegg Support, stating that the cost for both the monitor and shipping is going to be refunded. Additionally, with the high cost of shipping, Newegg support felt that shipping the monitor back will not be necessary.

Looks as though this will end well. 🙂

Damn...sorry to see that!

That's one reason why I decided to buy both my laptop and LCD monitor locally. The other reason being that it's easier to deal with a return locally for a dead pixel problem. Strangely, I've ordered 3 CRT monitors, and a TV in the past and all arrived without a scratch or problem. An they were packed in nothing more than the factory sealed box.
