Word is, the 38xx series is a bit slower than the 2900XT. How ATI managed this one, eludes me.

Yeah but what kind of word was out before the 9700 was released? Does anyone remember ? That was such a awesome release! I can remember it like it was yesterday!

Watch their profits tumble. Such is life in the big leagues.

edit: Seems to be the prediction from some of the financial community, that amd's new offering appeals to oems.

My usual places of research have dried up. Seems like everyone (who knows anything) is under nda or something. Alls that is left are the usual shills, which as always is very muddy waters. Amd will win in features it seems, so if fps is close.... Should be fun times as forum shills for both hivs try to define what exactly close means. So silly such a to do over mid range cards.

We'll see what happens, but it wouldn't make sense for the new Radeons to not be able to match, if not exceed the 8800 GT. There is a reason why NVIDIA moved their launch up a couple of weeks.

However, we'll see for sure in two weeks.

Why, they'll release the new 8800GTS of course. :p

But seriously, I think that we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg with the 8800GT. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing some truly MONSTER cards from both camps in the very near future to deal with the present Crysis (pun intended).

this is starting to remind me more and more of amd's recent amd launches for both cpus and gpus. let me know if this sounds familiar:

amd announces cool new product.
intel/nvidia announces cool new product with great benchmarks.
intel/nvidia releases cool new product and produces even MORE badass benchies on launch day.
amd brags about how great their drivers/price/dx10.1/etc is but doesn't produce anything that resembles a benchmark.

what'd I miss? If 3870 could beat 8800gt amd would have announced it on the 8800gt launch day to steal nvidia's thunder. nvidia moved the launch up b/c 3870 is a great card for a great price and almost certainly clobbers any pre-8800gt cards on a price/performance basis. they didn't want to let amd snag any of us poor suckers who have been using "midrange" cards based upon 3 yr old technology. We happen to constitute the vast majority of the pc gaming community, so our hearts and minds are critical to everybody's success and/or failure.

If you are talking about r600, that sounds somewhat right in a certain cynical way. If you are talking about the x1900 or x1950, well no... Current benchies continue to show them good for their generation.

Anyways only 15 days or so and we will find out if amd has an overpriced mid range card or if they can compete. Their graphics division fared much better than the rest of amd, mainly based on the oem success of their midrange cards. Inexpensive cards that perform well for the price bracket - that use less power and are not hot - sell.

Being a borderline ATi fanboy it really pains me to do it, but I have to agree with you.

pigs will fly!.....i cant believe everyones still harping on about if AMD this and that, it should be clear from the past R600 effort, AMD, will only compete in mid range......
Poster have already stated the obvious, if AMD had an ace up their sleeve, they would already have played it to spoil NV's launch....in point of fact, they are probably waiting to see how pricing goes, so they can enter at a lower price, cause thats about the only plus they have to play.....
