If ANYBODY refers to CoD:MW2 as CoD5...

...you will be reminded that it is indeed NOT CoD5, multiple times if needed. I plan to be very anal about this.

That is all.

since W@W was called COD:5 W@W right? Wait, no.

Its the same as GTA

Vice City and SA were not called "GTA 4 & 5" just as COD: W@W was not called COD:5.

I'm pretty sure they're taking the GTA approach - same engine, updated features not meriting a new "book", just a new "chapter" of the same "book".

I'll guess 1 more iteration of this from Treyarch next year, and then Infinity Ward will crank out COD5 - maybe for the new generation of consoles?

The marketing explanation here is that the publisher is trying to leverage existing brand equity in the "Call of Duty" name in order to make more games that the consumer will reflexively associate with the previous CoD games they loved. It's a reasonable strategy.

The problem is that everyone also associates spin-offs with crap quality. There are a few exceptions (see: Shin Megami Tensei), though, so maybe they can avoid it if they keep putting out high quality products. We shall see.

You're using big words, so I don't know what you're talking about. But World at War and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 both have the "Call of Duty" name attached to them.

And I'm even pretty sure World at War isn't officially called Call of Duty 4: World at War, it's just Call of Duty: World at War.

And that Modern Warfare 2 has dropped the 4 altogether, so it is just Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

It's also possible Activision has decided to stop with the numbering because it "cheapens" the brand (as if releasing a new version every year doesn't).

I will forever refer to it as COD4 2.

EDIT: Besides, everyone knows that COD5 is W@W :p

You have grasped the essence of my argument.

Yes, it's a new brand. But since it's got the "Call of Duty" in it, people associate it with the original Call of Duty franchise, which, by all accounts, is quite good.

Yep. They've taken the Call of Duty brand, and made it into three brands:
1. Call of Duty:
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
3. Call of Duty: World at War

Someone in marketing probably thinks they're a genius. :p

Maybe. It hasn't hurt Final Fantasy too much.

No. It MUST be referred to as CoD:MW2. I may even be anal about the lowercase "o", but I haven't decided yet.

I think I'll call it CoD5 just to annoy you :D

Haha. :D I only started this thread because I was reading another forum where someone, for the 1000th time, got all pissy because someone called World at War, CoD5. A lot of people here do it, too.

To be truthful, I'll probably call Modern Warfare 2, CoD6, just to piss everyone off. :p

Do you call Call of Duty: Finest Hour CoD2, because it was the second full game in the series and had a distinctly different plot from the previous game in the series?
Do you call Call of Duty 2 CoD 3 for the same reason?
Do you call Call of Duty: Big Red One CoD 4 for the same reason?
Do you call Call of Duty 3 CoD 5 for the same reason?
Do you call Call of Duty 4 CoD 6 for the same reason?
Do you call Call of Duty: World at War CoD 7 for the same reason?

Just wondering, because it seems like Call of Duty: World at War is the first game that people have done this with.

Not really. Finest Hour is the consoles' COD1. BRO is the (lesser) consoles' COD2. Even if they are completely different games.

The logic makes sense, even if it's wrong, if you follow this organization of the series as depicted on the Call of Duty series' Wikipedia entry.

So, not to derail the conversation, but this is the first I'm hearing of cOd:mw2 (yeah, that just happened). Any news on when this comes out?

I think as far as Infinity Ward is concerned, CoD: MW2 == CoD 4 since it'll be the fourth game in the series developed by them. ;) When they announced CoD: World at War I thought they were going to go back to giving numbers to IW games and subtitles to Treyarch games, because previously all of the numbered games except CoD 3 were IW games, and all of the subtitled games weren't developed by IW. So I initially balked at calling Wold at War CoD 5, because it seemed at the time like there might actually be a game coming out named Call of Duty 5. Then they announced Modern Warfare 2, and I ceased caring.

One thing's for sure - publishers don't mind putting out games with confusing titles. Imagine how confusing it is for casual gamers to figure out what's what.
