should you notify the person you give before you give their name...? is it a big social faux pas not to?

I'm sure it'd be proper to..

"Make sure when you answer the phone, you answer 'Vandelay Industries'".

its usually a good idea since some people do get angry about it but most people if you know them well wont get overly upset about it

You probably need to ask if it is ok to use them as a refference before you actually give their name.

Yes, you should let them know before you put it down. Better yet, try to know exactly what they will say about you.

you should always get your references in line even before the interview. Big faux pas if you don't even let your refence know.

er, so at my last job, i asked 3 people if i could use them as a reference and all said it was okay and were cool about it. that gives me the green light to use them whenever without having to ask every single time i use them as a reference, right? these are professional references btw.

you should still let your references know that they might be expecting a call. and if you get the job, find out if these references were used, and then write proper thank-you letters.

Yeah, personal references I would.

Business references, probably wouldnt matter, but I would try to if possible.

I specified that I would use refrences once when applying for a praticular job. I didn't want my CCNA instructor having her phone ringing off the hook..

That was the hardest part about getting a job for me.

StormRider <--- no friends to use as references. :(

you BETTER ask permission before you even get their name and contact information.

It is very dumb not to get permission. How do you know what they will say? I've had people that worked for me use me as a reference without checking first. In a couple of cases, I was not overly impressed with their work and gave a very bland reference (I didn't say they were bad, I just didn't say they were great). In those cases they didn't get the job. I would have told them not to use me as a reference if they had asked.

You can't use friends as references. Former bosses and co-workers are the best.

Yes, talk to them. It's called networking. Be very nice and professional, check in and say hi, how's it going, thank them yet again and give them a few details about the situation so they have an idea.

The way the job market is these days, they may need you to favor them back.

Not only is it polite to do so, it gives them a chance to think of something good to say about you without being caught cold.

What is that from? I know I've heard it before but I can't remember.
