If AMD graphics in all upcoming consoles, whence nVidia?

It wasn't about AMD offering this but more-so what developers have been saying if they had more flexibility and how DirectX is holding them back.

nVidia is pushing Cuda and not necessarily a common API for all but why? Because sometimes proprietary and going beyond standards is needed to innovate and move things at a quicker pace.

If developers had more flexibility and not be shackled by just standards, one may see some impressive innovation.

To me, one can argue that the GTX 590 or HD 6990 are the fastest depending on applications and resolution. Both companies can claim fastest card.
 
My bets are that Sony and Nvidia will be partnering again for the PS4. It would make sense especially if Sony wants to maintain backwards compatibility.

This is misinformation. The Radeon 6990 has been shown to outperform the 590 in the most challenging games and is also built better, has no risk of burning up, and does not explode. In addition, while the 590 needed numerous hotfixes, throttle mechanisms and patches, the 6990 has worked as it should, not failing.

Take what SirPauly stated as factual and you'll do ok. Because you really do need to own both cards to be considered the owner of the fastest. One beats the other.

hehe, indeed. Fastest and loudest are good descriptions of the 6990. A friend of mine got one and it so soundly (pun intended) beat anything ive heard in the noise department aswell as in the performance department.

Then again, you can watercool the beast and that opens up even more OC room. Something you really cant do with some other cards, atleast you couldnt in the start.
 
it is not a quiet card, but my headphones kill it, nor do i hear it if i turn my speakers up a bit; so i find noise an irrelevant factor for me, personally.

fact is, if youre dropping that dough, both cards will give you excellent performance. its up to you to decide which pro/con balance suits you better

on topic, if as per the latest news blurb, AMD is getting its 28nm cards out by this year itself, then Sony will probably already be thinking about how the PS4 will stack up against the competition

Perhaps this is part of the compliance needed for the cross platform gaming that is allegedly in the works for the next gens that will allow users to play games on at least some games servers with different console users and even PC users.
 
Imo the biggest danger of the console contracts is the strain it puts on your r+d department. If you do a fairly custom gpu (like what the xbox 360 has) then that takes a fair amount of extra r+d, and you have big companies like MS breathing down your neck to make sure it's done. That takes some of your best engineers off whatever else they were doing (next gen gpu compute, or consumer card, or mobile or whatever).

Hence this could mean nvidia produce a stronger consumer graphics card for the gen after the next gen consoles arrive then ati as they haven't had to divert their r+d efforts. Historically this is the case: xbox->FX series for nvidia, xbox 360->2900XT for ati.

That said I suspect nvidia are more interested in tegra and telsa then consumer cards so that's where their effort is going not desktop gpu's or even lower margin console ones.

I still don't understand the appeal of dual GPU cards duking it out for the title of fastest videocard. A native Xfire/SLI solution using two cards is basically superior in every way. Could someone explain it to me? The only benefit I can see is it being potentially cheaper than purchasing two cards.

Not everybody has a dual slot PCIE board or people want to quadfire\quadsli them.
