More than once, I've seen a member do something that they clearly knew (or should have known) would cause getting banned. I wonder if they just wanted to see if an exception would be made or not.

I can't remember ever seeing a new person - who wasn't being a troll - not get a warning first if they went over the line. But if the mods say "doing X WILL result in being banned" and a person does it anyway, what did they expect? The mods should just let it go and look stupid? Or was it "they won't ban me, I've been around too long." And sometimes people have made up their mind in advance they are going to leave, and decide to act up until they get banned.

Yes, there are boards out there that allow any type of language or pictures, but apparently this board has chosen to not permit that. It's no big deal, people can go wherever they want and where they feel comfortable.

A person posts 50 new topics in a row - I think they'd get banned anywhere.
A person replies to a topic over and over until the server crashes - I think they'd get banned anywhere.
Knowing in advance certain words or topics are not allowed, and then posting them anyway - I think they'd get banned anywhere.

Sometimes it's like someone littering in front of a cop and after they get a ticket they run to tell their friends, "Yeah, man, I got a record."

I'm not saying every case falls into one of those categories, but many do.

It couldn't be Paulson, it'd be too obvious. Paulson & Hubbs are both on wireless, & their IP address is the same.

Yes, I understand this can be seen as a little inflamatory but it has turned into a productive little thread, eh ?

And for the record, I'm an AMD Fan.

Ok, so he's not GUTB. ;) Considering that troll was being discussed on the General Hardware forum, I thought maybe he found a way to weasel back on here. I know he misses the attention.

I have noted a thread elsewhere, wherein a former member claims to have been banned, allegedly for the offense of creating a second account for the same person. He/she feels that the offense was noticed because the 2nd acount was created from the same IP. Is there indeed a restriction to one account? This would seem to be a case where I would have expectd a warning to have been issued, rather than outright banning; especially in the case of a relatively seasoned forum participant.

Mr. OhmHazzard,
My apologies, sirrah. My timing was something less than ideal, I see.

To the others here, Mr. OhmHazzard is well-known as a highly respected member of the Ars OpenForum. His nickname is entirely apropos, given his technical expertise and knowledge of electronics and other related subjects. As you can no doubt see by his posts here, even when having a bit of fun he does not make a habit of descending to trollish behavior.

I must say that the members here have also exhibited (with, I suppose, a notable exception) commendable restraint, and a willingness to explain the why's and wherefore's of their fora and their moderators. I have not always seen this to be the case, on any forum.

Regards,
_Fakir

<< as to why so many people get banned more than any other tech >>

is that a bad thing?

The fact that the moderators here are all anonymous and, I believe, comprised of established members of the forums, makes it difficult to be judged fairly. I suppose it depends on the moderator, but most of them seem predisposed to banning new people at the drop of hat.

At most other sites, the moderator(s) are the site owners and administrators. They tend to try to maintain at least an air of impartiality. I don't think the same can be said of anandtech.

And how long have you been here?

webhobbit: Don't worry about it. A war between the boards? I mean come on, is this turning into a bad science fiction movie or what? Can't we all just get along? ;)

;)

I'm fairly harmless.

Besides if I started any crap over here Ceasar (Mod/Leader over at Ars) would be pretty pissed.

I'm just exploring a bit. You ever post at Ars GirlFriday?

Well, it started out as a little curiosity and a tad of mischef, but I'd rather not see things get all bent out of shape.
There seems to be some pretty good folks over here.

(...maybe those who haven't should stop by Ars sometime). :D

---

Maybe we already have. :)

On Ars, you posted:

<<Haven't had a mod visit me yet, but after reflecting on the thread it dosen't appear to warrant any banning.>>

We have been aware of your presence since you started this thread. All we have seen is a friendly discussion. Last time I checked, that was not a bannable offense, but it looks like we may have disappointed your friends in the @ Ars thread. :)
