I gotta say, it IS one of the biggest jokes on the net.

"I got banned from the AnandTech forums"

So I'm thinking....hey !
Why the hell haven't I been banned ?
Kinda like a right of passage I guess.

So I figured I'd best hop to it.

:D

So if you get banned, am I supposed to be upset? ;)

Actually, I have now had two of my favorite people banned, and I am still here. So I guess the answer to your question is no. And if I wanted to leave, I feel no need to get banned, I would just go.

Hell no !

I wouldn't want to upset anyone !
It's just that we're having a little conversation over at Ars, and it seems almost everyone has been banned from here at one time or another, and I kinda felt left out.

So I thought I should investigate this little oddity a little further.

So can anyone enlighten me on how/why these forums have developed the reputation of banning as it exists today ?

Someones gotta do it?

Honestly, I think they try too hard to maintain a family happy community, with the age variance we have with our members.

But at least they try.:)

Several members have been banned more than once and then reinstated.

Evidently, some bans are temporary and others are permanent. It depends on which rules were broken and if there was any kind of warning first.

For reinstatement, generally it appears a sincere apology is in order and a request made to be allowed back. The request is evidently considered by the moderators and administrator and the banned person is often allowed back after a time.

As to AT reputation, evidently there is a stricter policy of adhering to rules than the other forums. I wouldn't really know as this is the only forum I regularly (have time to) post at.

<<I gotta say, it IS one of the biggest jokes on the net.

"I got banned from the AnandTech forums">>

Sounds like pure childishness babbling to me

And yes, I realize that is probably not a word, but what the heck, we aren't playing scrabble here.......

Ah, let me assist you in figuring my identity.

I'm new.
Suspicion being a popular past time, I'm sure several of you will be scratching your heads wondering "who" I am.
But I assure you this is my very first day here with you folks.

Lots of people talk about getting banned from this place.
So much so, that I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

I've seen some very strict forums out there, but they are all of a lower profile nature.

Other popular forums have a self-regulating feature, which I do see present here, only confuses me as to why so many people get banned more than any other tech site.....

Ratkil: You may see that statement as senseless babble, but I guess you haven't seen things from the other side of the fence.
Go visit Ars, [H], or your pick of a dozzen other sites and take a poll about who has/has not been banned from Anand.

The results may suprise you !
(Then you can retract that "senseless babble" statement).

In response to OhmHazzard's question, it would depend on who got banned and for what.

But I'd probably still hang around.

Well Mr. OhmHazzard,
I certainly know you, and I think I can confidently say that I do not consider you someone given to 'childish babbling". I will confess, however, that this is something of an incendiary topic with which to intoduce oneself to a new forum. ;)

OhmHazzard,

Most of the bannings I have seen are because the person in question seems to think they are above the rules and do not listen to what the Moderators tell them. Or as in a recent incident they insult other members which is against the rules. If you use common sense and follow the rules you will not get banned.

PC Addict: Yes, I am here for a little fun, but also to satisfy my curiosity.
:)

And for the record, I'm an AMD Fan.

acctualy this IS one of the strictest forums ive been on. and alot of the time people get banned for what i would characterize as trival and petty things. sometimes that can get really old, being banned for a day for saying something negative about the board, or mods locking threads for no apparent reason. i guess it all comes down to control. the Mods feel that they need to impose their will (and yes they do impose) in order to maintian the ingrety of the board, which isnt a bad idea because it DOES work. in fact this is one of the most well administred boards ive been on, but that level of Mod involvement also has it's down side in that they can basicly censor anything you say and compleatly at their desrection which is un-democratic at best and down right facist at worst, but you have to take the good with the bad and this board is good, it provides me with an enviorment in which i can express my opinion with out having to worry about some troll coming along and screwin up the whole thing. that's what the Mods are there for and i think they are doing a great job considering that they volinteer albit in a somewhat dictoral way. any way that's just my $.02....;)
