If Al Sharpton was ever elected NYC mayor, the NYPD would quit in droves

Al Sharpton was the 1997 Democratic NYC mayoral runner up, getting 32% of the New York City Democratic vote in a primary, he lost though, but had he gone on to defeat Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the general election, the NYPD would have quit in droves. They would not want to serve under someone who was seen as anti-police and always angry at them....

A thread the OP started that might actually have a kernel of truth in it.

Of course the NYPD would be quitting because they would be afraid of being held accountable for their actions. Now the bonus is they wouldn't be being paid to not do their jobs so there is a chance it would be an improvement for the city.

The job of mayors as Bernie Kerik's chief of staff John Picciano says is to back the police, to support the police....

Cops don't want to work in a city where they don't get the support of the public and the politicians.

I am absolutely shocked, just shocked, that a member of the NYPD would claim the job of the mayor is to back the police.

The job of the mayor is to run the city and implement the policies they believe will improve the city.

I am not a stupid person...

Sharpton was the precursor to American politics today
What political office has this specific scary black man held that has shaped politics, not-a-stupid-person?

I'm also assuming that as a self-identified, not-a-stupid-person, you've possibly heard of Newt Gingrich? Or am I reaching on your level of non-stupidity here?

That's not the implication I was making. I'm just wondering what exactly it is that made you decide to post a thread about what would have happened if the NYC mayoral race 26 years ago had gone differently.

Pretty sure the Mayor’s job is to support the public—the wellbeing of all people and businesses and institutions within the city. Not just the police—that would be pretty fascist of them.
Then why did Giuliani support the police 100% from 1994 to 2001 when he was mayor, even in police brutality cases

Newt lasted for 4 years, yes he was a factor but Sharpton had more impact....he was BLM before BLM....BLM changed politics forever

Why do unbalanced folks always try to shift attention away from certain atrocities by mentioning Blacks who have nothing to do with it?
Sharpton has everything to do with police brutality....that's his whole life, is talking about those things

The black boogeyman strikes again! Hide your wife and hide your kids, a black man is in the neighborhood! Black people are the most powerful minority in this country! They weld so much power that they shape politics as evidence by the complete 180 police have done after the passage of the many police reform bills that blacks brought to their state houses and Congress and their unstoppable political power!

/is this country really that full of ignorant jackasses or does social media just make their presence look big like a cat who has made his tail bushy?

Uh... so that merits creating a discussion today about a mayoral race 26 years ago because... why, exactly? What does this have to with anything at all?
Al Sharpton is influential because he brought police brutality to the limelight when everyone wanted to look away after the Rodney King beatings in the 90s

He kept it up in the news and a lot of Dems are afraid of his power

Sharpton has a lot of power.
