From the limited amount I can understand it sounds like it was meant to be pretty staged. The dude was supposed to endure whatever she dished out and had agreed to it. she slapped him and he was supposed to endure it, instead he hit her right back because he didn't think physicality was in the bargain and everybody else assumed he knew it was.
