If a new car at the dealership has a big markup over MSRP, who do you blame?

I'm just wondering.

Other consumers: Pay selling price
Dealer: Sets selling price
Manufacturer: Sets MSRP

Some cars that are selling over MSRP in some parts of the country are the Prius and the GTO

Everyone.

Mfg for not producing enough and creating demand by advertising, hype.
Dealer for not being noble enough to stick to MSRP.
Consumers for buying the car you want.

In Canada...it is illegal for dealerships to sell over MSRP for a new car.

So do dealerships drive it for 5 miles and sell it as a used car? ;)

No....they don't do it. The only way around it is if the dealership"buys" the car. Then, of course, its now used.

blame the maker for not setting the MSRP at $5000 over the market price like they do every other car

If I ever went to a dealer and they tried to sell me a car over MSRP I'd never go there again and I'd tell the dealer to his face that I dont buy cars from cheats.
Dealers who are honest sell these 'special' in demand models to their long-term valued customers at MSRP to get a customer for life.

Capitalism.

Explain...

Supply and Demand.

Go on...

If there is a low supply and high demand, the price goes up

Go on...

You are an idiot :p

:p

Ok, sorry to use you guys like that. My degree was in econ so I know enough about supply and demand.

I'm just tired of seeing threads where people bemoan the evil dealerships for marking up the prices on their ultra-popular cars and wanted some place to point those people...

BTW, aren't you supposed to thank God for my ass? ;)

Your ass changes the COM for the planet. I don't think we should be thanking anyone for that.

The poll looks interesting.

But there are no explanations in the thread to back up the results...
