IE8 Backspace means backspace?

I was typing a document in IE (ironically an IT support ticket) and hit backspace to erase a typo.

So naturally it jumps back to a previous page. I go forward and everything I was working on is wiped.

How can I set backspace to backspace in IE8?

Thanks!

Can't replicate your problem in IE8. Backspace works fine in any IE8 text box. I sense the problem is in the app (The IT support ticket) you are using in IE8.

Lucky for you, your backspace works :)

We get the same issue on Google.com, Yahoo.com and Microsoft.com websites. Different computers, different users also replicate it.

Apparently a lot of people get this problem, I googled it. Unfortunately the fixes I have seen so far requires access privileges I don't have. I was hoping for simpler one.

Other than using notepad and copying and pasting. :)

I am thinking it may be related to some of the apps/add-ons that my office overloads our machines with. But I get it on my home machine as well?

Granted at home I rarely use IE so I tend to forget about the bug (feature?) until I make a typo while using it.

It's got to be an add-on or something because by default backspace within text boxes works but just on a page will click back.

That's unfortunate. Check other IE integrations you guys have and see if one of your programs/addons is causing the issue. A vanilla install of IE8 will have the backspace delete stuff out of a textbox.

Are you on a touchpad by any chance? If you aren't in a textbox, backspace indeed goes to the previous page for whatever reason.

That happens occasionally on my system. I just randomly tap both Ctrl, Shift and Alt keys furiously for a couple of seconds and then backspace starts working normally.

Sometimes some part of a page other than the text box will steal your focus. If this happens as you are hitting backspace, this happens. It's really a stupid design to use backspace as a a shortcut for previous page, given how often you need to use the key while typing.

your focus was on the browser window itself and not in the textbox? May have done it accidentally.

Default for GNU/Linux seems to be alt-left/right for bk/fwd. I found that annoying at first, but got used to it. I don't know why it's different on those systems.

Its that way in IE as well (also FF and probably chrome). I never understood why they have back as backspace as well as alt left.
