IE7 Slow

I have two computers, both XP with the latest updates and both have a problem with Internet Explorer 7.0.

System #1 is an older system . . . 900MHz with 512MB of system memory. For some strange reason, it had changed its default setting to Work Offline. It then tells me that I need to go online to reach this page, so I click on File and unselect Work Offline and then the next time I go into IE7 is has defaulted back to Work Offline.

System #2 is somewhat newer, also running XPP with the latest updates, and this one takes a long time to connect to the home page when first launched. Sometimes it will be 5 or 10 minutes before it connects. After that, I can leave it minimized and it will connect to another site as expected, but if I exit and then go back in later then I have the same delay.

It can see the router without problem, as well as the other computers on my small home network. E-mail works without delay.

Any suggestions???

Thanks for the shout back Robisbell!

Both systems are on cable (RoadRunner) and like I said, once you connect to the first site it goes as expected. I will check out this test and report back tomorrow if it shows anything.

EDIT: There are five computers on this small network, and this is the only one having any connection problems.

Check the following setting.

From Internet Explorer click "Tools"->"Internet Options"->"Connections"->"Lan Settings"

Uncheck "Automatically detect settings" and then proceed to test the system again. This is the most common setting I have seen for your problem. If this is not the case please post your system specs and check for spyware/adware.

If you have no problems connecting to other computers on the same network and email works just fine, then it could be an issue with your IE7 that it may be corrupted or the settings got high-jacked by spyware/malware.

Try installing FireFox and see how it works. Also you might want to try uninstalling IE and reinstalling to the latest version again.

siskel77,

Thanks for the input! Yes, the Auto-Check box is unselected.

I have checked for malicious software with AdAware, SpyBot, Windows Defender, and HiJackThis and everything was clean. This is normaly a low-risk computer, but I had tried to do a through check just in case.

gtechie,
Good thoughts! I have the IE7 update as well as the latest FoxFire on my thumb drive and will give that a shot in that order this evening.

OK, question #2: We all got off on discussing the one computer with the slow connection, and nobody everybody seems to have missed the second system where IE7 defaults to Work Offline every time you launch it. Once I unselect it from the File menu, the rest of that session on IE7 is just fine, but if I close the program and relaunch it later, then it is defaulting back to Work Offline.

Any suggestions???
