XP on T42 laptop - I've tried resetting IE completely from the RESET button of the Advanced tab. There is no "uninstall/reinstall" as far as I can see - they recommended using that reset button. All defaults are in place but it won't load any pages whatsoever. It simply shows the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page.

Other browsers on the machine work absolutely fine. Cold booted, etc. There's no proxy server set. Same problem with wired / wireless connections. What else can be tried?

1) try this command while logged on as an administrator: netsh winsock reset

2) smack it with the System Restore stick :D and go back to before the issue arose.

Any good?

1) rebooted after and same problem exists
2) system restore attempted 3 different checkpoints from last week and they all failed (I have not usually had luck with restores in the past either).

3) :(

In Internet Options > Connections, anything odd there? I'm sure you looked already, though.

Just the dialer for my vpn but it's the same results whether I'm connected to it or not. Other browsers work, IE7 does not.

Since it's a work laptop, I've been pushed onto level 2 support when I called in...

I had level 2 on the phone with me for an hour... they uninstalled my antivirus and still couldn't get stuff going. Then I rebooted.. and now it works (no AV installed at the moment). Antivirus the culprit... hmm... settings on it I never touched.

I'm having the same problem, but I'm in Vista...getting (Not Responding). Firefox and Safari work fine. (Can't get Chrome to install properly.)

How do you unhijack?

Try loading Hijackthis and seeing what is being loaded. There are forums (also listed on site below) that will help you decode the info that Hijackthis presents and can help you eliminate what shouldn't be there. This is especially handy for seeing if any startup programs are loading that shouldn't and browser hijackers.
