IE6 Cipher Strength

Hello all,

I have just installed a system connected via wireless to a boadband base station (Mircosoft). When I look under "about Internet Explorer" the Cipher strength shows 56bit. On the system that is connected to the basestation via ethernet it shows as 128bit. Some financial cites are disallowing access unless I have 128bit. Both have same version of IE

Question, how do I change the 56bit to 128 bit encryption ?
 
Go to the WindowsUpdate site and get the 128bit encryption pack. That or better yet, just download IE6 (sounds like you're using an early version of 5.01 on one and 5.5 on the other)
 
Bingo, there is a Win2k patch to allow 128bit encryption. I just installed it, now IE6 shows 129 cipher strenth.

Thanks for heading me in the right direction

IE must need the Os to support 128bit cipher. I installed IE6 yesterday and it definately showd up as 56bit. I could not log into my bank.

I just installed "Encpack_Win2000_EN", and now IE shows 128bit and I am able to log into my bank.

Interesting, everytime I've upgraded a system to IE6, it's ended up at 128bit with no extra patches. That's the wonder of Microsoft Windows! 😀

Maybe it's because it's Win2K - they did it on purpose since it's mostly used for networking or something along those lines?

HUH? No offense, but that makes NO sense what so ever.

The encryption strength was addressed in one of the 2k service paks I believe it was sp2.

Yea you're right it doesn't - I worded it funny. I basically tried to say what you mean. SP2 did in indeed upgrade encryption to 128bit (permanently)
