I just installed nt4 on my system (because I use it at work and I wanted to experiment with it), and it comes with ie2, and no quick launch..
from old knowledge, I know that I need to install ie4 to get the active desktop enhancements which include the quick launch and other good utilities like right clicking in the start menu, and left clicking on programs to minimize them...
these are all utilities that I've grown used to, and they even have them on nt4 at work.. so I'm a having hard time without them...
I just need ie4.. I know that later versions of ie (5 & 6) don't have this enhancement included...

so I took out some really old backup cds, and I found ie4, but they're all full downloads but for win9x...
it says you have to download off the web, so I say ok, and then it gives me an error.. most probably because microsoft doesn't distribute it anymore..

so my question is does anyone have the installation files for ie4 on NT4?
or maybe a simple ripped installation of just the active desktop? (I tried installing from the CABS the ie4shell.inf and then had to reinstall windows)

Why dont you install ie 5/6? And we have 6 on a system at work and I cant see an option for the quick launch bar so I dont know if you can get it just by getting ie...

You used to be able to do it back when AD was all the rage coming out of MS. I had the bar running on a 95 machine after installing 4.0, but that was 2+ years ago and I no longer work at that place ;) There was a section in the old installs called desktop enhancements, that included AD, but it sucked so they killed it.

n0cmonkey, the active desktop (AD) isn't included in ie5 or 6..
only ie4...

old installs ?? where is this? you mean an installation seperate from ie4 called desktop enhancements??
and they killed it? what do you mean??

does anyone know how I can get ie4 or AD on NT4??

I could just install ie6, but then it only enhances my browsing, it doesn't change anything in windows..
AD makes old windows (95 / NT4) look like windows 98...

I think I keep it around here somewhere on CD just in case of something like this... I'll see if I can dig it up and zip it up... dunno how big it'll be though.
