IE versions and incompatability with sites

I'm running IE10 (v10.0.10 as of this AM...) and I'm finding more and more sites that throw up a window saying something like '...your version of IE is not supported, update to a newer version of IE or Chrome, etc.'

Is that for real? ...or is that just a sneaky way to get you to go to Chrome or Firefox? I'm running what is, according to MS, the most current version of IE (for W7, I'm guessing.)

I'm just confused and don't want to jack up my browser... 😕
 
it's for real, which is very weird, IE has been known for being the most compatible browser, now it's the most INCOMPATIBLE one, many sites I visit for example won't even login and won't even display the IE compatibility mode button, I then have to manually switch the rendering engine

not that I use IE but just tested it for a while to see if it's improved, same old crap
 
I might be the part of MS trying to make the IE browser more standards compliant.
What is happening is some sites might still be wanting ie8(designed for only ie, vs standards) and when it sees 10 it saying that its not compatible.

About the only way around it is to run that site in the Compatibility View, which makes the browser tell the site that its IE8(I think the version) and then it should work fine
 
I already have 'display all websites in compability view' set... I did have to set it that way to address another few forums that the 'return' key didn't work on.
 
This likely has to do with the website itself and nothing to do with IE. Many websites try to detect browser versions to evaluate compatibility and implement certain rendering features. This is generally bad design; your site should check for browser features, not version. That way when newer versions of browser implement those features, your site can take advantage (see this article if you're interested).

Microsoft has the unenviable task of trying to reverse years of bad HTML development made to accommodate IE 6, 7 and even 8. In standards mode, IE behaves quite nicely with web standards, but there are a lot of websites that use code that says "oh, you're using IE? Let me use these rendering and scripting hacks so my site works correctly." Often these hacks are no longer necessary if you're running the newest version of IE. This is why compatibility mode exists in IE, but it's not always a perfect solution.

i agree 100% with you because microsoft has let down all of the website owners with slow internet explorer browsers. when i first upgraded to windows 7 i was surprised that i had to use internet explorer 8 even when internet explore 9 was released because so many websites failed with internet explorer 9 and worked 100% with internet explorer 8. crazy time 🙁

I don't know why it should say that for IE 10?!

For me as someone who makes websites, this is actually a huge problem. I just made http://www.berlingermany.eu/ (simple site) for a client and it took me a while to find a suitable wordpress theme. After some testing I found that this site has a problem in IE 8 (unless you run IE8 in compatibility mode, but then it's still screwed up somehow).

Every non-working browser etc. in this business is BAD. Say if 25% of people still use IE8 that means a good chunk of lost money. Since I didn't want to change the theme again I installed a plugin which shows a message to upgrade the browser to a newer one if it finds IE8 or some older FF is used.

I assume that if you see such a message with a new browser such as IE10, the site or the script whatever is just so outdated that it doesn't know that IE10 is actually recent?

As a coder, it really *****es me off that HTML standards seem not to work across all browsers, there is almost always ONE or the other incompatibility across browsers.
 
A lot of business stick with IE, I have a client that I have to use IE6 in XP mode because the stupid dvr software will only work with 6 or 7

Photobucket is one... I don't think they are using outdated script.

I'm still quite surprised some users still use IE?..I thought we all was on Firefox,Chrome,Opera or Pale Moon etc...

You want a serious answer?..There are better browsers then IE out there with superior customisation,speed etc and free too.

Dunno... never had a problem with IE as a browser. I don't need customization... in fact, I prefer simplicity.

Give me your best example of a simple, fast browser... no tabs, no nonsense.

Chrome (which I hate)is quite simple so is the new Opera 18,infact last time I used IE as default browser was IE3 since then not really needed to use it even IE11 is redundant for me with Win8.1.

Best answer I guess is all relative,but to be fair I think IE is far from the top three.

I do know one thing,you have plenty of choices out there,sure there must be one or two you will like.

That's the backup we are using on the one site my wife has to use... I fiddled with it but I'm not seeing how it is better than IE. Part of the problem is, if I'm getting it correctly, I have to sign into my Google account (which I don't have) to retain user settings or something. I'm not a big fan of Google...

I'll have to give some of the others a try...

You aren't getting it correctly - or at least you are getting it incompletely 🙂 Chrome keeps local settigns just fine without logging in. Logging in lets you keep your user settings across devices.
 
IE, especially IE6, has had problems with standards compatibility. Especially HTML 4 and CSS3 (cascading style sheets). That was mostly because those standards did no exist when IE6 came out.

Since many big corporations kept using IE6 because it worked and because it was expensive to update, most responsible web designers had to do extra work to test all their CSS designs with IE6 and to introduce work arounds. It was a lot of extra work and they all hated IE6 because of it. I was in that group. But, it had to be done.

IE 8, 9, 10 are much better about HTML4 and CSS3. Most big companies have finally upgraded to Win7 and newer versions of IE.

Most web designers now assume that IE 6 is gone and don't worry about it. Their server logs tell them what web browsers are hitting their sites.

The problem now is that hot shot web designers really want to use HTML 5 features to produce really cool web sites.

HTML5 is in draft and the features are changing.
In September 2012, the W3C proposed a plan[29] to release a stable HTML5 Recommendation by the end of 2014 and an HTML 5.1 specification Recommendation by the end of 2016.

It is hard to build a browser that fully supports a version of HTML 5 that is not yet fully defined.

It is harder for Microsoft because they are committed to also support the IE6 quirks so that existing web sites continue to work. The other major browsers care more about the future than about the past. They have an easier task.

None of the major browsers fully support the draft HTML5 standard.
The best are about 30% compliant with the new proposed standards.

Try IE 11, it will have more support. It was released yesterday for Win 7.
 
Updated to IE11... I noticed you can't turn tabbed browsing off like you could in IE10, but so far, so good. I'll have to take some time with it this weekend and see how it fares.
 
ie pisssed me off i cant even use google those people over at microsoft have their head up their a** they blocked ie from accessing google on the browser in windows 8.1. so screw it im going firefox
 
Part of the issue is there has been so many versions of IE lately, I think web developers are just getting tired of having to constantly write exception code for IE, because MS refuses to follow standards. It will be nice if major companies like Google stop supporting it, maybe it will force MS to actually follow standards instead of making stuff up as they go.

IE has been following standards quite nicely for several versions now.
 
One of the main reasons to ditch IE for a better browser is Adblock and similar extensions not available on IE.
Charlie what do you have against tabbed browsing? I'm kinda curious why you don't care for it.
