IE v6 problem - was prob with Direct X 8 - Now fixed

😱 I'm hoping someone can give me an idea on how to fix a problem I recently encountered in Internet Explorer. When I am on a webpage and I try to do any of the following:

1) Hold shift and click a link
2) Click on a link that attempts to open a new window (pop-up windows)
or 3) Right click a link a select Open in new window

...I find that IE opens a new browser window but never fills it with data. In other words, I get the outline of the new window, but it opens with the current window's graphics so it looks like it is transparent. However, if you move the new window, you can see that it is actually a cookie-cutter print of the section it is overlapping. (In other words, if the new window is on top, you see that it is a new window, but everything aligns graphically as if the 2nd window was not there.)

Anyway, this just started yesterday, and I cannot seem to fix it. I am not out of resources, I rebooted, reinstalled IE6 again (on top of the existing install) and it does not seem to fix it. My guess is I had a .dll get corrupted or something, but I really can't seem to find it.

Any developer gurus in this forum have any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Did you try:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Click on IE6, and click Change/Remove. Then, opt to repair Internet Explorer.
 
Tried to Repair IE, but that didn't fix it. Went to the website you recommended, and I had very high hopes, but alas, it didn't fix it.

Dude, that ticks me off. I wish I knew what else to look for. Do you know what you did before this started happening? Plus, what version of Windows are you running?

AMD Duron 750 w/ 384MB RAM running Win98SE. All updates installed from Windows Update. Internet Explorer v6

I installed a program called Iambigbrother to evaluate it for my sister. (It's a internet filtering program that can be set to monitor everything, including instant messaging) I also ran Ontrack Internet Cleanup to clean up the junk on my system. (cookies, history, cache, spyware, etc.)

If I had to guess, i think I may have removed a piece of spyware that had altered one of my .dll files, OR IAMBIGBROTHER replaced one of my system files with a different version. I'm not sure what programs installed my spyware, so I can't go back and reinstall it to see if that fixes everything. I probably should check System File Checker and see if it fixes it, but so far I haven't been motivated enough to try. That tends to be time consuming, going file by file by file.

I've never heard of IAMBIGBROTHER. I'd try a couple of things. First, uninstall that. Then, clean everything out as much as you can. Then, in these Winmag Explorer Back Issues, look for the series entitled "Scrub Your Hard Disk Clean". That'd help you understand how you don't need a big program to clean your hard drive, but instead use a batch file to do so. Once you see how much this helps, I think you would then uninstall that Ontrack Internet Cleanup.

Last but not least, if all of this fails, maybe you should try sfc (unless you want to reinstall Windows). Or, you can use IEradicator to uninstall IE and reinstall it cleanly.

I had never heard of IamBigBrother, either. That's why I installed it to evaluate it! 😉 (My sister has a 14 yr old nephew that can run circles around her when it comes to the PC. She had surfwatch, but the subscription ran out and it got corrupted, so now she is completely wide open to his late night surfing habits)

I'll check out those other links, but for now, I'm going to completely uninstall IE with that program you recommended and then see where that gets me.

If you ever want to evaluate anything, and you want it to be fullproof that it won't screw up your system, I'd suggest purchasing an imaging software (i.e. Drive Image 5.0, Norton Ghost 2002). This way, if it does, the image will consist of your setup before, without any trace of your activities. Nothing beats this...Nothing!

Anyways, I hope everything works out, and your, I mean...her computer gets back to normal. Plus, if you find a good filtering software that's cheap (read: free), would you mind PMing or emailing me? Thanks!

when I click on a link that opens in a new window, all I get is a blank page... no data, not a thing

I am running on win2k and I have no idea what the heck is going on with this thing lately ! lol

 
frodhi, I would say that my suggestions applies to you as well. At least think what you've done recently to bring about these reactions. Post back!
 
i have norton ghost, maybe i should have thought about installing it ?
i am not the most computer literate person out there, but i know that i did nothing that could have made it do its little freaky thing ...

Ironically, I DO have Norton Ghost. I was just thinking the other day that i oughta make an image of my system and burn it to a CD because my system has been running so stable lately. Oh well...

Anyway, I removed IE with IEradicator. Nice program. I reinstalled IE6 after words, and umm...oh well, thanks for all your help!

(In other words, problem still exists.)

I can live with it if I have to, though. i can always hit escape and then refresh. That will load the page, but occasionally hitting ESC and then refresh does not work exactly as it should have. No biggie, though. I'm gonna have to dig around a little to see what else i can find. And use SFC, of course.

&$!#@(@!!!! SFC didn't work, either. I also tried re-registering urlmon.dll again, but still no dice.

One thing I should maybe elaborate on, though. If I am in e-mail (Eudora Pro) and I click the link while holding <shift>, the link opens a new window and everything comes up fine. If I click on a shortcut on the desktop or go through explorer to my Favorites folder, I have no problems. It's only a problem if I try to open an additional window from within another IE window.

Something else I noticed today, though...when the new 'ghost' of an IE window opens, the browser activity icon in the upper right corner of the browser window (On most systems, it's the Internet Explorer 'e' and a Windows flag) continues to move like the page is trying to load. However, it appears that the request is not being sent through the line. In other words, the window opens to a non-full screen window, but if you look at the DUN connection icon in the system tray (the icon of two computers overlapping each other), the PCs in the icon do not flash the bright green to show any modem activity. (I actually have DSL, but I use WinPoET, which acts very similar to a DUN connection) IE is trying to open a page but it appears that the request is not being sent through to the internet. As such, it can't receive data that must not even be getting requested.

And again, when the window opens, it doesn't open just blank. The browser part of the window opens as if it is transparent. (I wish I could grab a screen capture and upload it to show you exactly what I mean) If I switch to my mail client and then click on the 'ghost' window, I see the outline of the window and the toolbars fine, but the actual part of the browser screen that shows web page data will show everything my mail client would show, aligned perfectly. If I try to move the 'ghost' window, I screw up the alignment because the background window's data moves with it. If i then switch to another app, or even another IE window and then switch back to the 'ghost' window, I now have THAT latest browser's data. You might even picture the web page part of the browser as a see-through pane of glass until you move it, in which case you see that what you THOUGHT was the browser behind is actually appearing in that browser. Switching to a different window and then back results in the 'ghost' window now showing that window's data. It's quirky, I'll admit.

Worse case scenario: I'm thinking about getting a new hard drive, so if I do, I'll just install it and start everything over from scratch. I really don't want to do that, but I will if I have to. I still haven't run Win 98 setup again over my existing install, but maybe I should try that, too. It's just irritating because I just blew everything away and started over from scratch about a month ago. My ISP had a network issue that they denied (and since I had just gotten DSL, I took their word for it and figured the problem was in my setup) so I started tweaking and ended up breaking my network properties completely (as well as hosing the registry) and after a few hours of troubleshooting, decided i could just rebuild faster than manually gutting the registry of everything myself. I'd hate to have to do it again, but I may end up doing it tomorrow.

Oh well...😀:disgust:
 
Fixed this problem several days ago, but everytime I came to update this, I had a system lockup or something. (Installed a new video card early this week and my motherboard was fighting with the drivers)

In case anyone is interested, the problem was with DirectX 8.1 (or whatever the latest upgrade at WindowsUpdate happened to be) While troubleshooting the video problem, I ran across the Direct X folderin Program Files. I saw the dxdiag file, so I figured, why not? During the diag tests, I received a message stating I had direct x registry errors and that the product should be reinstalled. I went back to Windows Update, clicked the bar for show installed updates, then checked off Direct X and reinstalled it. After rebooting, the problem went away.

Thanks for everyone's help. I hope my final resolution helps you guys in the future, so this thread wasn't entirely a waste. 😀
