IE or FireFox?

I just completly redone my PC and reinstalled everything.

I was wandering what do you think is better for a browser IE or FireFox or what?

Could you explain why one is better than the other?

I have always used IE just because of the updates by microsoft but have been hear alot about it not really being that good.

Firefox for its customizability, but be sure to get the IEView extension in case you run across pages that only work with IE.

what's better ? Well it depends what features you use... because Firefox is just an extended IE that you need to download separately. Do you really need it is the question. I guess it's good as a pop-up blocker with nothing more to install (unless you grab the googlebar for IE and use it anyway)... Tabbed browsing for Firefox is just a gimmick IMO... alt-tab to new windows is much faster than point/click to another tab.

Either way, you will need to patch up IE just in case, so it's not like you'll be saving any work by going to Firefox. The latter loads up webpages slightly faster, but it takes longer to initially load. I open/close browsers all day so I can't be dealing with initial load times...

Firefox is not related to IE in any way, it's a completely different codebase and as such has none of the problems that IE has and is a much better browser all around.

The advantage to FireFox is that it is NOT IE.

FireFox is a better browser than IE in almost every way. Well, in every way that counts, about the only thing you will need IE for is Windows Updates, which is once-a-week occurrance, which lasts ~10 mins for me. The other 10070 minutes of the week FireFox is open on my machines.

Sorry for all the dumb questions but I want to know what I am getting into before I install it?

Also if I install it and dont like it does the uninstall completly remove it or is like some other free programs that you really can never get rid of?

I don't even use IE for Windows Updates. I tell Windows to automatically download crucial updates for me and notify me when they're ready to install. Most people find this feature annoying, but it's really unintrusive and if you're on broadband, it's unnoticeable.

I use crazybrowser (it's basically a "shell" for IE) and have been using FF too. They both offer pop up blockers and tabbed browsing, but I'd have to say crazybrowser is faster and basically works better. FF has some really nice features such as themes and it's open source (which is good and sometimes not so good...) so there are a lot of extensions and plug-ins available, however I don't care for the way it handles fonts. (it took me a while to get the settings to 'stick' and even then a lot of fonts are small, blocky and scrunched together)

I'd say install both and use whichever one makes you happy.

Would you also reccomend getting thunderbird to replace Outlook Express?

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook (part of office 2000) for email.

outlook (not outlook express) has much more features that thunderbird, if you need them, keep it

Use Firefox (or Mozilla). Much better in every regard.

It's a web browser, not a new OS. Download it and see if you like it. If not, then uninstall it.

Uninstalling it actually does remove it, though it probably leaves your bookmarks, e-mail, etc. in your profile directory.

Gimmick?

Try having 20 windows open.
20 tabs is a hell of a lot easier to work with, imo anyway.

You actually only need the ie engine.
I use Avant for my updates.

Due to some web sites design though, I sometimes have to go back and use IE.

No ActiveX in Firefox either, so you don't have to worry about pages with "malicious" code attempting to hijack your browser. Overall, you have much less to deal with if you use Firefox, which is why I think FF > IE.

I have yet to try CrazyBrowser, but I think i might give it a whirl though just to check it out.
