IE locking computer in fresh Windows ME install

I've just installed ME onto a P4 2.4 400 MHz, 768 meg RAM, MSI Ultra mainboard machine. The first time I did it IE would lock up going to the Windows update site after I installed Office 2000. This time it locks up before I've installed Office. Oh, it'll load until it comes time to show the page. Then I have to hit ctrl-alt-delete. When Windows reloads it doesn't do the scandisk automatically either.

Any clues?

hmm, well there's a problem with win98se with cpus faster than 2.1GHz which can be solved by replacing Ndis.vxd with an updated version.
don't know if ME suffers similiarly but you can try this fix

Perhaps, but all the other systems in our house are running great with it. In fact, because of a minor hardware issue (A20 gate f'ed up on the motherboard's keyboard controller chip) with my old Dell it won't run on anything but ME. I don't currently own XP. My customer needed at least 98 but wanted ME so what was I to do.
I'll investigate that fix in a moment.

Well for a start you can get rid of ME. Windows ME is possibly the worst OS you could possibly run on your computer. Get rid of it install 2k Pro or XP home or Pro (i reccoment Pro over Home tho) amd then you'll never have any more IE lockups and far fewwer BSOD that Windows ME si infamous for.
 
I don't need anymore ME arguements. It's what my customer wanted. I can't help that.
I've been told that these motherboards are a bit buggy anyway. I'll need references about that now.

Failing a reinstall of ME, get a CD that comes with a computer magasine and upgrade from IE 5 or IE 5.5 to IE 6 SP1 this might solve your problem and i won't even complain about ME
 
I had a similar problem with ME when I installed it into a new computer with 1G of RAM. The problem was that ME has a problem with RAM over 512 unless you modify the system.ini file. MS knowledge base articles 181594 and Q181862 deal with this. 'THUGSROOK' wrote a nice article on this in one of the forums at this web site (I think that it was in the Motherboard Forum, under the P4P800). Asus tech support also confirmed that this was my problem. I followed the instructions and ME is working very well. I hope that this helps.

I've read the MS articles and looked for the post by THUGSROOK. I can't find the post by him.
The 181594 article deals with 95b and the second one I haven't figured out yet. I don't want to limit my accesible RAM.

I upgraded to IE 6 SP1 today, after I finally got it running. I've swapped out the video card and it seems to like it better, though the specs are less impressive.
Still, I don't want to hand it over to my customer again and have her get blue screens in less than a week.

Okay, so I need to add a line to the System.ini file. I did that on the project computer and everything rebooted just fine so I hope it's okay.
Now, will it work on the other computers in the house??... stay tuned. I'm going to try.
I'm wondering now if the video card I pulled out will work properly...

My computer worked ok until I loaded the driver for the video card and then it crashed. After installing the line in the system.ini file, the video driver loaded ok and ME was ok. The video card that you removed may work ok after you fix ME.

That's what I'm going to try next. I actually have two of the same card here. One has a heat sink and fan attached to the main chip and heat sinks on the memory chips and the other does not. The former I got from someone on this board. It's the one that was in there initially and that I pulled. It's a Riva TNT2 M64. The one that is in there now is only a SiS 6326 AGP something or other. At least it's stable.
