IE LINKS STAHL!!!!

Just built my first pc. Everything seems to be ok with the hardware. It's the software that is driving me nuts.

With win98se,,, when I use the IE to log on to sites,, it will work for a few minutes and then the links freeze OR STAHL.
When I say freeze,,, when I click on a link nothing is sent. Then about 30 seconds later,, the request is sent. It will work for a while then the links "freeze" or STAHL again.
I was running win98se on my old pc and this never happened.
On the old pc, it was a upgrade from win95 to win98 to win98se. On the new pc,, it is a straight install from a oem win98 cd I bought about a year ago at a puter show.
I've reinstalled the o/s thinking this would help. And, it doesn't!! Netscape runs flawlessly. So does aol!!!!
I even tried IERADICATOR and then a new install of IE. The links still STAHL!!!
This is driving me nuts!!!!!!
Also,,, have the same problem on a pc I use at work. Neved did any updates on that one other then update to newer versions of IE.
Oh,,, the failure occured before I installed aol on the new build. Also,, went into msconfig and disabled everything in the startup.
There are other problems with the pc. The burner gives me errors when I try to create a data cd. That's another story or seperate post.
I posted this same probelm (stahling links)a few weeks ago in other forums and wasn't able to resolve the problem.

Then ill put money on it that its a hardware problem, modem configuration, or something like that.

Sorry about the "Stahl" problem.
Didn't have the coffee yet and this guy "Stahls" quite a bit without that first cup of coffee.

Wondering about the modem being a problem.
At work,,, I use a 56k modem. At home,,, I am on dsl and I don't have a dial up modem on the home pc.
Is there a common setting for these???

If you are on PPPoE, your computer may be looking around for a DHCP server that does not exist. Check the following: (windows)

Open control panel

Open Network

Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).

Select it and press properties

Select IP address from the tab

Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".

As you are using Win98SE, also use this update Windows 98 Second Edition Problems with NDIS Intermediate Drivers

I made the change on the network settings that you suggested and so far,,,
IT HAS BEEN AT LEAST 4 HOURS OF CLEAR AND GLITCH FREE SAILING WHEN I USE INTERNET EXPLORER!!!
Those changes have saved my sanity!!!!!!

One more question. (I've regained my sanity to ask one more question) Would the changes also work on a plain old dial up modem connection???? I am on vacation this week and won't be able to try anythng there untill next Monday.
