IE: if I "open in new window" old window closes upon the new one opening

Or, is there a workaround?... the website for my grad work detects the browser and won't load the pages if it's not IE.

The problem is driving me nuts... I'm betting there's an easy solution, I just haven't stumbled into it. I don't know if one of the kids or wife made some weird switch of my settings or something. I only use IE for grad work - it's required for compatibility..

Anyway, If I right click and select "open in new window" It opens in a new window and immediately closes the window that was open.

Ideas??

Thanks!

I tried reinstalling, but that didn't appear to help...
Now IE is there, but there's no "uninstall" for it.

Win ninety8 SE, most recent IE

problem 2: nine button doesn't work... o button barely working... At least that's an easy problem :)

Are you sure you don't have some kind of trojan on your machine? I'd be suspect of that more than anything else.

nope... I check frequently for trojans, spyware, etc.
Just ran a complete check today using AVG, Spybot, Adaware, and Hijack This.

Well, since you're on Windows 98 SE have you tried removing IE 6 and reinstalling it?

Yup. That was the first thing I tried - after going through all the options, looking for that one setting that I must have missed.

There's a fix for when this occurs in XP, not sure if it'll work in 98 or not but you can give it a shot. I remember having to do this back <hint> before I discovered how far superior FireFox is and began using it for 99% of my browsing needs </hint> ;)

Anyway, start -> run -> regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Keep in mind this worked for me in xp, not 98 - use at your own risk, ymmv, etc.

Yes, I use firefox for virtually everything... until I figure out how to use firefox to access my school's online site for online grad work, I'm stuck using IE. If I attempt to use firefox, it boots me out or denies me access to pages with a simple error message: "unrecognized browser"

When trying to open a link in a new windows, try the alternative: shift + Click

Let me know if this works for you...

*cough*IE is required for my grad work *cough*
I appreciate all the suggestions to switch to Firefox... believe me, I've been using firefox for a long time (and don't you have to pay for Opera - if not, I would have tried out Opera... I just can't see paying for a web browser when firefox is free)

The school's website just ignores my browser if I attempt to get to pages in firefox... I've even copied and pasted links, but nothing. I can copy the links into another IE window (on a different computer that will ALLOW me to have 2 IE windows open)..

But, no matter what I do in IE, when that 2nd IE window opens, the first one immediately closes. I wonder if somehow it isn't related to the removal of some spyware or something.

Tried to reinstall IE... problem not resolved. There is extremely little I do on this particular computer that would justify paying for XP.
