IE DNS problem

My IE started acting up today, I'm not really sure what's going on... hopefully someone can provide me with an answer.

Every time I fire up IE 6.0, WinXP SP1, it connects to 127.0.0.1, even if I am typing in www.google.com. At first I thought it was my DNS cache doing something funny, so I did a ipconfig /flushdns. It will didn't work. I started Firefox, and suprisingly, that worked. So it seems to be something that IE is doing, but I don't know what.

Has anyone encoutered this before?

I think there is a new virus that messes with your HOST file and makes everything points to 127.0.0.1

I don't think it's the Host file.. the host file controls everything your system connects to, not only from IE

Doe sit only affect IE? On the commnd line do a "nslookup www.google.com" and see what address your DNS server comes back with. Look in your hosts file and make sure www.google.com is not in there.

I think I found the problem - it was a proxy setting that set the proxy server in Tools -> Connections to "localhost:6502". I should have looked there in the first place but since I didn't put it there, I thought it was some kind of browser error.

But now I think it's some kind of adware... every time I reboot, it's back there again! I've run Lavasoft Ad-adware a bunch of times now, and updated SpywareBlaster. Nothing seems to be able to get rid of it.
