IE and VPN question

OutHouse

Lifer
I dont have DSL so no VPN for me, but i have a friend who asked me this question and i dont know how to answer it.

"my IE is configurd to use a static IP rather than a dynamic one and the DSL installation doesn't like that. Aren't I supposed to have a static one for using the VPN or doesn't it matter?"

Anybody have any idea??

Well, first of all, the guy doesn't really know too much about networking. IE doesn't care if you use a static IP or DHCP.

That said, I use DHCP and use VPN to connect to my office without a problem.

In general, you don't need a static IP to use VPN. It's possible that the network admins configured the network to accept only traffic from certain IPs, but it's pretty unlikely.

You don't need DSL to use a VPN, you can even use a VPN over dialup if you want, but it's usually discouraged because the encryption overhead makes it extremely slow.

IE doesn't care what your IP is as long as it can get to the web server you want to hit.
