IE 6 not loading pages that are linked

Hey, I just started having a problem with IE6 in XP.

When a site opens a new window via a link (such as when somebody links a hot deal from anandtech), the window opens, but the page doesn't load. I have to copy & paste the link into the new window....

I have a similar problem to you jfunk and as yet nobody has been able to help me sort it. I'll watch this space .

Got this from today's Lockergnome Windows Daily newsletter. Hope it's not copyrighted, cuz I'm just passing the information. Try it and see if it works.

Oh no! The links aren't working like they once did in Outlook Express. You either can't click 'em or they're not going anywhere. Or, perhaps every time you open a link in a new window through your mail client, Internet Explorer spits back a blank page. Have no fear - Geekdude is here! The solution is quite simple (and it doesn't require a reinstallation); we just need to re-register the URL monitor. Heck, if you're having any kind of hyperlink hassle, give this a whirl. When software doesn't behave, sometimes you have to spank it. Click on Start | Run and enter: "REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL" (sans quotes). You should then have a dialog tell you that the procedure was completed. Next, fire up Microsoft's Web Browser (IE) and Click Tools | Internet Options | Programs | then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Now, check to see if Web links work like they should in your e-mail client. With any luck, you'll have returned your system to normal.

I'd already seen your post in another thread btvillarin; but still no joy. Strange thing is that I can open links in Outlook but not in IE6. I am running a dual boot 98SE/Win XP Pro and it's only XP which gives me problems. I hope somebody can throw some light on this thing before I ditch XP altogether :|
edit: after I'd posted I went to copy/paste your link btvillarin and it worked with first click, so I thought YES. Went to try it out on links in other threads but no go again. So how come your link works for me? This is driving me nuts!

I didn't post this solution before...I just got it like right now, and this was the first time I posted it. Just try it...see what happens...

I'll give that fix a try in the morning when I get home. Hope it works...this is a totally unacceptable problem.

As far as I can tell, this started sometime within 24H of when I got most of the windows updates, but I'm not sure exactly when....

The same exact thing happened to me with links not working in IE. It happened sometime after I installed Netscape 6.2 and also Studio 7, but god knows what else I did in the meantime as well. (ie: windows updates, etc)

I blamed Netscape 6.2 and uninstalled it, with no luck. (Before I uninstalled NS6.2, I tried making it the default, but even though the "check for default browser" option was checked, IE never complained.) Then I tried the reset web settings button, hit that, while also making sure the "check for default" was still checked, and suddenly I was able to get links to work again. Then I reinstalled NS6.2 and I was still OK, so who knows what caused it to break.

Reset settings....now why didn't I think of that?<G>

I'll try that first thing when I get home from work in the morning.

I'm not able to access your website link btvillarin, but the lockergnome one works a treat. I'd already tried the "regsvr32" thing in fact I've tried it twice. Is there a way to do an IE6 repair 'cos there's no mention of it in "add/remove" programs?

BTVARALLIN,

Thanks. The URLMON fix you posted did the trick!

Of course something just went crazy with some of the colors on my new monitor....ahh, this is neverending!
