IE 5.5 has trouble remembering websites

I have IE 5.5, and all of a sudden it won't remember websites that I've already typed in (such as me just having to type in "for" for "forums.anandtech.com" and it'll bring down the drop-down menu and give me choices for websites that start with "for".) I don't mean Auto Complete, because this actually brings down the drop-down menu and gives me choices based on what I've typed in. Also, I've looked in TweakUI and made sure under the IE tab that "Clear document, run, typed URL-history on exit" is un-checked. Any help on solving this problem would be appreciated.

If you're saying you have NO history or typed history addresses, then I'd go back to TweakUI and first, check the box that says Clear History, then click Apply. Then Uncheck that box and click Apply. If that doesn't work, go to Add/Remove Programs and choose Internet Explorer 5.5 and click Add/Remove. It won't remove it, so don't worry. It will bring up a repair box asking you if you want to Repair IE. Choose that. Let it do it's thing and then reboot.

Under Tools>Options is an option for days to keep sites in History. When the period specified passes (or the Clear History button is pressed), the sites "remembered" in your address bar are deleted. It's possible that that time has passed since you installed/starting using IE -- usually, bumping that up to the max (999 days) will prevent that from happening every month or so.

I tried all of these things, and unfortunatley, none of them fixed the problem. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Make sure the box for "Web addresses" is ticked off under AutoComplete options as this IS a function of AutoComplete...

Increasing the History days option will not bring back old sites into your Address bar, simply prevent them from disappearing again in the near future. If you're still not able to see any sites that you have visited in the last day or so in the dropdown Address bar box, try closing unnecessary applications/rebooting/otherwise freeing up resources. Occasionally, that feature is 'lost' when your machine is 'busy' doing other tasks.

Ladi - I put a check mark in the "Use Auto Complete For Web Addresses", but now it's not bringing down the drop-down menu, just finishing the address for me, which I don't like. Before it actually brought down the menu, revealing all websites that started with the first few letters I typed in.

Try hitting several sites that begin with the same few strings so that they will get stored in your History...after that, typing those first few letters should bring the dropdown box back. Right now, you probably just have a minimal history so IE is only finding one or two matches each time you try to type in a new URL.

Bad news, it's still not working. Before I could type "for" and be presented with every site I went to on the Anandtech forums, like "forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=32", which is a fast way to get to the Technical Support section of the Forums, or "forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=33" is the Software section. Now all of a sudden it won't do these things anymore. When I click on the arrow on the right side of the address bar, yes, there is forums.anandtech.com, www.yahoo.com, and stuff like that, but it only has the basic main website, not anything after that, like the long addresses I stated above. Any ideas?

:) stop typing in your website urls and bookmark 'em! i place my frequently visited sites on the links bar (an optional bar underneath the 'address' window) on IE. whenever, i want to logon to anandtech forums, i just hit that button and voila!
