I had to reinstall 98SE after a crash. In the process IE5.5 reverted to 5.00.2614.3500 (!?). I went ahead and downloaded the update again and it seemed to reinstall but java menus were not displayed. A few boots later and I note I am back to 5.0 :(

Here's the wierd part; when I went to update the server said I appeared to be running 5.5 and no update was necessary.

Ideas?

yeah,if you keep d/ls in a seperate directory,I make one,and name it'zips'then you can do the reinstall from there. The ie5.5 has a repair feature(i think) that will allow you to get right again.

Thanks for responding. The more I try to fix a few things here the more apparent it becomes that the registry got fairly fried. I still can't install my NIC or sound card without it taking the modem down...

I do keep downloads in a separate directory - but after the re-install and a few re-boots I am somehow back to 5.0.

Where do I find the repair function?

Why don't you restore your registery to a previous date(if you have not done so)and eliminate your present problems with the registery.Once corrected then you can try and download 5.5 .
In Dos mode start/run/scanreg/restore and pick a date before all these problems started.
The repair function for IE 5.5 can be found in the Control panel/--add/remove.Locate IE5.5 in the list and hit the add/remove and a option to repair should be present.
Good luck.

I downloaded the app again, and so far it has 'stuck'. IE is integrated into 98SE, so you can't store it as a separate file, nor can you repair it once installed....
