Don't do it. IE 5.5 is not worthy of final. Its slow on my Athlon 850 and I've had a few crashes with it. IE 5.0 is great and its not worth getting 5.5.

Essentially you download it for internal bug fixes that most likely won't crop up and "Print Preview"... the only noticable difference.

Hey Ltk, I was browsing through your sit and saw that you ran ads from Adforce. Was it hard to get approved from them? I can't even find the section within their site to apply. The main reason I want to go with them is that they allow ads to be put within forums (like this one) whereas Engage Media doesn't...

I just d/l'ed 5.5 today, I haven't had any problems with it yet. It doesn't seem much different than 5 although it did add MSN.COM to my bookmarks, which pissed me off, but oh well.

I've run into a lot of people who have tried it, and the results are mixed. The ones who haven't had any problems say they don't notice much difference, and the rest have been cursing Microsoft ever since. There really is no need for it, so why bother?

If you're having problems with 5.0, try downloading 5.01. I haven't had IE crash on me in weeks (except for once, during my ill-advised AOHell experiment).

I've been using IE5.5 for quite sometime and I like it, haven't had any problems with it.
Mind you, I was using Nutscape before....

I like it fine, it seems a little quicker. The hour glass thing is annoying though..

Coming from a developer's point of view, the latest incarnation of IE brings the user more DHTML capabilities and supposedly a closer adaptation of HTML/DHTML standards. It also corrects some of the problems with Cascading Style Sheets.

If eyecandy is your thing, then having the latest and "greatest" from Microsoft would be to your advantage. If not, give it a few months for any bugs/holes to be found and patched.

HTH... :D

Sacotool: It's not really a bug. Microsoft, visionaries that they are, decided that general population does not like to look at an hourglass when a page is loading. So, they "optimized" IE 5.5 to show an hourglass for a fraction of a second when a page is loading. This is only some of the time, at other times an hourglass is never shown. <rant>Needless to say this pisses me off to no end.</rant>

I also noticed that the progress bar on the bottom of the screen is useless. I have had it reach 100% and say the page is done, when it is still coming in. This happens a lot on this site when I am pulling in a large thread.

I take it all as an f'you to the broadband challenged. :(

As an IE user since 3.0 (I still have the 'I Downloaded!' t-shirt), I'd have to recommend you stay away from 5.5. 5.01 SP1 will do just fine for a while. I do have WinME (IE5.5) which is fine and also recently decided to try Netscape 6.0. Could get interesting once all 6.x browsers are released.
