Intrusion Detection:
I had a hack attempt on my server (at work) the other night and while I am 98% sure the guy didn't get in, but I'd like something a little more robust that can tell me if something like this happens again.

I know very little about security, and THIS hacker seemed to be not very intelligent, but what about next time?

I'd appreciate any feedback.

 
Just be aware that an IDS is very much not a set it and forget it type of thing. Deciding what alerts are good and bad and then tuning the rules to weed out future false positives is a PITA.
