Idle Temps @ Stock

idle temps are 43 42 37 37 with stock cooler at stock clocks.... system is in sig...

i didnt add any good compound to it.. just used whatever the hell was on the bottom of the cooler when i got it, 3 little strips of some compound which im sure isnt very good...


short of remounting this thing with those pushpins, which make it insanely hard to get the 4th one down i might add, what can i do to get these temps down?


oh and prime 95 got the core 0 and core 1 up to 68* before i stopped it... seemed a bit high to me.

Turn off the fan control (PWM) in the BIOS. It should spin faster at idle.

The TIM used on retail Intel Core2 heat sinks is as good or better than AS5.
The compound Intel uses is made by Shin Etsu. Several reviews claim Shin Etsu X23 is the best TIM made. The formula Intel uses may differ but is very good. I had lower temps using the original TIM on my E6400 than using AS5. So unless you did not get the heat sink seated correctly your temps are as good as it gets. How is your case cooling? What software are you using to report temps?

And also, what is your room temp and is your case under a desk or out in the open? Case fans, Any? When I had the stock HSF, my temps were lower than what you show.

Case is ANTEC P180 and those temps were with both the rear and top fans on high...
those temps were reported with CoreTemp .97

computer is sitting up on top of my desk, room temp is 72-75 normally...

right now room temp is 75*F and coretemp is reporting
Core0 40-42
Core1 39-40
Core2 35-36
Core3 35-36

the temps are bouncing back and forth... and all that is open is two internet explorer windows and coretemp 0.97

RivaTuner, AIM and Windows Sidebar... im running Vista 64-bit if that helps...

I was doing some checking just the other day and came accross Boxed fans and how they are at stock speeds as to oc'ing. Take a look. This my help you deside what you should do. Those temps are in range of the Cpu but I would seek a better HSF. hope this helps.

well, i just ordered a Zalman 9700 NT and some AC5 and some of that AC cleaning/purifying crap... idk if it really works or not but for 6 bucks what they hay...

should be here in a few days.... im dreading tearing this system apart... SLi, 3 drives in the lower cage and it not being a P182 makes for cables everywhere

Ya it sucks but the results of it all is worth it. Make sure you read the "benchmark" thread in here for information on how to apply the TIM

I assume CoreTemp isn't reporting Farenheit - those would be too cool! Pls help out by using a single scale to report temps.

75* is like low 20's C... its room temperature, so no need to really give an exact number...


but yes it would be nice if everyone stopped using Celsius for temps... i think it sucks as a measurement.

what are these freaking things supposed to idle at? and whats considered normal for full load temps with a stock cooler?

i cant seem to find this info anywhere... btw right now i've been running SETI@home for 30 minutes and the temps are 62/60/55/55 in Coretemp 0.97

air is probably 70-72 going into the case right now...

speed fan reports:
System: 40
CPU 63
AUX 35
Core0: 62
Core1: 60
Core2: 56
Core3: 56

i have added the +15 to each core as is required with speedfan 4.33


and remember this is OEM intel Cooler on a stock clocked Q6600 on a EVGA 780i...

I'm not sure what you're worried about; my Q6600 @ 3.0 on air (A7F Pro) runs at 37 idle (hottest core) and 57 (hottest core) under load. You're doing just above those numbers with a stock cooler and without OC'ing. So yes, if you OC your temps would be higher than mine with that stock cooler but we'd probably have the same numbers with the same setup. Take a look at the Q6600 OC'ing sticky thread, you'll see that the G0 (SLACR) Q6600 tolerates up to 71 so you're temps are way under that. I personally like my temps under 60 so that's what I've got worked out; you're just at 60 with your hottest core so I really don't see an issue. You've got a good case, what's your case fan situation like? Could you get better airflow? I'm sure you could tweak a few things to lower the temps a bit but I'm not so sure you should be at all concerned unless you want to OC on the stock air cooler.

I did just notice you said you got one of your cores up to 68 doing some Prime stressing, that might be a bit warm, but again, I'm not sure that should be a huge concern. For reference, all my temps were taken while stress testing with Prime95.

I don't see the problem. Then again, I was brought up on Celsius and always thought it made perfect sense for 0* to be the freezing temperature of water.


Oh and OP yes those are decent temps. I got about that with the stock Q6600 and the stock HS and fan.
