idiot of the day

NuclearNed

Raconteur
The wife just called and relayed this story. According to the wife, the guy was 100% serious.

So for the past couple of days some guy has been calling our house and leaving messages on the machine. I have to credit the guy... he's persistent. He's been calling at least twice per hour asking for us to call him back. Since we didn't know his name (caller id is miracle technology), and since we are generally hostile to strangers, we haven't been returning his calls.

Today the wife got tired of the constant ringing and decided to answer.

The guy asked if he had reached the Social Security office. My wife said no, that it was a private residence.

The guy asked if she was sure.

She assured him that it was a home line.

Still confused, he said that this was the number he had gotten from the phone book.

"Nope, this is still a home number," she said.

Finally, he said "Well maybe they have the same number as you."

...and Mrs. Ned hung up the phone, then called me to tell the story. My last shred of hope for humanity just spontaneously combusted.

I read your post, hit reply, and couldnt come up with anything to say, so i backed out. Then I came back in, hit reply, and this is what I came up with.

I know, you definitely need to chastise her for not pulling a ruse and getting his info for mad loots.

In college we use to get calls from some old woman asking for her daughter or granddaughter. She argued with my roommate about it.

No no, you have to get somebody else to do it.

He'll probably think that by calling the wrong social security office number that future wrong calls will be transferred to him.

It's generally pretty hard to get anyone but drunk people to take part in this kind of thing...

...:hmm:...

Party Time?

Did she ask him what number he dialed? I have seen the phone company accidentally route numbers to the wrong place. Happened to my company once..was sending calls to CA..were in PA.

My number is the same as a T-Mobile office except for the area code. Most of the wrong number calls are pleasant enough but one conversation went something like this:

SM: Hello?
Idiot: Put Pam <forget exact female name her> on the line!
SM: No.
Idiot: Listen, you smartass, this is Bob from regional headquarters. I don't know who trained you but this is NOT how you conduct yourself on the telephone.
SM: Listen, you idiot, I don't know how YOUR mother trained you but MY mother trained me to be polite on the telephone.
Idiot: <screaming, cursing, and rambling on>....wait, this isn't T-Mobile is it?
SM: No, it isn't, have a nice day.

At least you took some of the heat from the poor rep that was obviously going to get some of this wrath.

Call him back and state you are the SS office asking for a Samathan Shin - or some random name that is not him.

When he states he is not Samanthan Shin, reply with; "Well maybe she has the same number as you."

If he says; 'Wait! I've been trying to get a hold of the SS ofice for days!' Tell him to call this number; give him your number again.
