This just goes to show you that give them a shiny pretty button to click and they will. People accept meetings out of habit with little or no thought as to when and where something is. To the point...they don't read.
As for a house warming party, I'm afraid I have to side with the naysayers. Either provide the main dish or the beer when inviting people to your house. When I was unemployed I had a house party and I had beer, grilling dogs and burgers, and a cotton candy machine. I didn't ask for a cent. But what I got back was donations, sympathy, and some new friends out of it.
It sounds like you are straddling two house payments and I am sure it has put a strain on you. There is no shame in having a party when you can afford one, or just have a select group of friends over. But inviting coworkers sounds like you were just showing off your house.
