Identify this squash

My MIL's neighbors were out of town and told her she could pick some things out of their garden so as not to let them go to waste. Out of the various things we received was this squash. We have no idea what it is, or how to prepare it, so I ask you, identify this squash!
 
Looks more like a decorative gourd. Some are edible, many are bitter tasting.
 
Yeah, looks like a hybrid between an acorn and something else, they cross pollinate quite easily, but it is worth it to try. One barometer of how it will taste is how pithy the flesh is, the tougher the worse it will probably be.

I would do as suggested and go ahead and cook it up as if it were an acorn or butternut squash, which are better off in a hot oven with a bit of moisture.
