Identify my CPU, so I can get MB, P4 1.8G

What information do I need to purchase a used MB (hopefully this forum) that will work with the chip? I realize these chips are cheap but I don't like to waste a good CPU...

That will work on almost any socket 478 mobo. Honestly I wouldn't spend more than $15 max on an old board. Do you have a local computer flea market? If not there, perhaps CL.

Be sure and pay attention to the ram sockets, as socket 478 boards that will work with that board can be found with any of the following ram types :

SDRAM
DDR1
RDRAM

So bear that in mind. I just sold an AXP 2500+ and NF2 for $25 a few weeks back, so the going rate for old combos is pretty cheap.

Since you don't have a 478 motherboard, I wouldn't put any more money into this hardware unless your budget was extremely tight. It's just too old.

For as little as $40 USD, you can have a new low-end CPU that will outperform that P4 easily. Matching motherboards start about $40 USD as well. (Spend more if you have it, naturally -- just saying what's possible.)

You can probably get a much better mobo/cpu combo on the FS/FT section. For close to what you were willing to pay for a mobo for that chip. Just doesnt make much sense putting money into slow obsolete hardware. For all you know that chip may not even work.

gychang, I'm not sure how current you are with proggies and MB's and the deals out there these days, given your admirably restrained post count this last, ummmm, decade, and I don't know if you live near a Frys, but it's my opinion you would be far, far better served by one of their combo deals.

For instance, right now in store they are offering an Intel Celeron E3200 + MSI G31TM-P21 motherboard for $40 after a ten dollar rebate. This Celly has virtualization support, so you can run XP Mode on Windows 7, and people have reported a full 1Ghz overclock to 3.4Ghz on stock voltage.

It would BLOW AWAY anything you'll be able to put together with your p4, and would be brand spanking new & factory warrantied to boot.

These kind of combo deals are usually only available in-store @ Frys, so you'd have to live near one to profit -- I don't.

Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't fully aware of what's out there!

thanks for helping out. With your suggestions I ended up getting the used combo for very good price:

biostar GF7100P-M7S: $40
pentium d 925 3GHz: $35

Now I may have to look for a good used RAM (first I am gonna go thru my garage first), how much can I expect to pay for 4G RAM for this combo in used market?

Honestly if your only using it has a quest pc for web surfing or other basic stuff 4GB is majorly overkill.

If your running Windows XP, 512MB will be plenty for doing basic stuff. I still sell my low end computers with 512MB and never a complaint yet. XP nearly always has over 100MB available even with multiple browsing and what-not.
