Ideas of what to do w/ my PII 300 MMX System!

No I will not give it to you. 😛

Heres the specs... nothing special but decent I guess. Would be used for the occasional internet browsing and stuff machine if necessary but what else?

PII 300 MMX
Intel Mobo
96mb PC100 SDRAM
1.6gb, 1.0 gb HDD's (really old, will upgrade later if necessary)
3dfx Voodoo3 2000
4x CD Rom (slow as hell, but whats it going to be used for?)

I was originally thinking of setting up a FTP server (upgrading hard drive later), but then I remembered that my upload on my cable connection is really bad.

As a web server... well I don't really have anything to make a website about.
And as an e-mail server, thats just more or less a waste.
And it's too slow to be a game server... soooo... any other suggestions?

Hook it up to your stereo and use it as an MP3 player. (hooked up to the network of course) It can host some MP3s too, although if you want to make it a dedicated MP3 host, it'll need a lot more HD space.

Throw a big HD init and make a music server out of it like I did. I use it for the storage of all my music and data backup on my home network. I also run WinMX on it most of the time to keep my main machine free for other tasks. It works rather well. You can also make it a print server at the same time.

Interesting but I don't have a stereo anymore as it took up way too much space during dorm life, and plus I forgot to add that it will have like a really crappy sound card (Sound Blaster Pro). lol. 😛

But my upload is really bad. At fastest I can get like 15kb/sec but usually aroudn 8 kb/sec. Backup data and stuff sounds like it could be useful but not necessarily going to be used much. As a print server, it wouldn't really be necessary since I'll only have this computer and my main one.

I'm trying to make real use out of this machine hopefully.

He meant just a local music server (as did I). 10/100 network card. $7 or so. Even an old 10Mbps card will work. MP3's don't require that much bandwidth. Keep all your MP3's on the PII. I did the same thing with a P-133, 64MB RAM, 10Mbps network card. Put Linux on it and learn how to use Linux. Serve webpages. Even if they're tiny and meaningless, you'll gain some useful knowledge. And hey, next time you want to post a pic or something on ATOT, it's no trouble to find hosting.

Also, I think that even an SB Pro hooked up to a real stereo would sound better than many computer speakers. It depends on your computer speakers. Also, it's only like $20 for an SB Live! Value.

Very true. Yesterday I installed Mandrake 8.2 on my old PII 400...

Router computer, I was going to use my P2 300mhz for that.. but the motherboard went fuct so I had to buy a used bp6 motherboard with two 500mhz celerons. Works great now, I also use it to divx all the mpegs file I have.

Also sometimes later I think I'll put my g400 in it and a soundcard and use it as a dedcated video and mp3 player

Use it as a test box for Windows and other Windows apps that you are not sure of. Nothing like being able to mess with all the settings and not having to worry about losing data.

Another vote for the home MP3 jukebox idea. I'm doing the same thing with an older rig...just added a bigass HDD and a Soundblaster card with the RCA-out daughter card. Plug card into stereo, plug box into router and you're all set. Very handy for parties and such as you can just make a huge playlist and never have to fiddle with changing CDs over the course of the evening.

I've got almost the same system as this guy does except mine has an 8.4GB hard drive. Anyways, how much RAM is needed for Linux? I'm thinking about installing Mandrake 8.1 on it just so I can try and learn something other then Windows 🙂

64-128 would be minimum, depending on your shell and what you do with it.

Sounds good people! I'll put Linux on it, and make it a personal web server, printer server, and router/firewall if possible. Just basic messing around.. all of these are new to me, so it should be interesting!

2.6GB is plenty.

shell huh? 4 is enough for linux w/o X, i'd say 16-32 would be the low end for X. 96 is definitely enough. just dont run kde or gnome.
