Ideas for SUV or alternative

An EcoBoost'd Ford Flex sometime next year will be a nice alternative, however that's going to be like 2x your $$$ figure, at least.

Four wheel or all whell drive is pretty close to mandatory. The ice in the winter here can be pretty damn bad.

I live in Canada
I use studded winter tires and don't have AWD anything and get by just fine.
Tires > AWD/4X4
SUV's are heavier meaning poorer performance on snow and ice especially braking

I have had 4X4's in the past their only areal dvantage over a FWD vehicle with good winter tires is ground clearance, which is what I used my trucks for 'ice fishing, hunting'
If your driving paved roads it isn't needed

This is correct. The others here are just plain retarded and obviously very concerned about the pecker size.

I drive a minivan...we have two actually.. My wife got hers..I liked it so much I bought one.. they do get a little better gas mileage...the seats (third row) disappear and the second row flips up very easily as well as removes easily...talk about a shit load of room..i use mine for everything except mulch and rock and dirt which i have delivered any way cuz 20 ton would take too many trips in a pick up. Plus the rear will all the seats has a great deal of storage.. and is low getting in and out of...combine that with power liftgate...makes those trips to sams or grocery store awesome...the sliding power doors also rock...i have a 165lb roof rack that I use as well. they all have the same fancy smancy shit on em like ESC...just not 4wheel drive..and if you NEED that, then go ahead.. Plus just all the storage and comfort items...
