Do you mean something like TeamSpeak? Local? Do you mean in same house/room or just in the same town? A family Radio service radio might work with a Headset and a PTT mic.

teamspeak and ventrillo are popular, i know all the clans i play with use one or the other. dunno what a server would cost per month though, but there are probably public servers you guys could hop on for zilch

i say use a plantronics headset though if you havent bought/decided on one yet, mine got eaten by a small animal, but i miss it :(

I use a basic headet mic without any earphones, just the microphone with a band that holds it on your head near your mouth. great for CS and HL mods if you dont want to block your surround sound speakers

I have tried Teamspeak, Battlecom (I think just old builds, as it is not maintained any longer) and Roger Wilco. Roger Wilco is the one that we use because some of my teammates are on dial-up and it seems to have the least lag issues. (I even set the sound quality settings on the server to very low levels, with the same results.) I have never tried Ventrilio, but I have considered it. Of those I have tried, I think Teamspeak was the best as far as voice quality and features, but it had to take second place because of the lag it caused on people with dial-up. If everyone you are going to chat with has broadband, that is the way to go.

Teamspeak
Roger Wilco
Battlecom
Ventrilio

Has anyone tried Ventrilio that can add a comment or two about it?

This is for playing over the internet. I'd like to have the option of directing converstation with just teamates. I remember Microsoft had a device called Game Voice a while back with buttons to map to teams and teamates.
