I have a project for my one class to come up with a powerpoint presentation. I got lucky I guess with getting networking.(I like networking but its all I have done this semester so its like I learned it inside and out.)

Its got to be at least 30 slides which I can say isn't a problem but I just wanted to run the outline by you guys.

I was thinking of doing it all based on the OSI model and implenting everything within that. I figure because the OSI model is such an important part that this would be good. At the same time though how do I implement the TCP/IP model.

Or just doing something like: OSI->Ports and Wires->Protocols->applications(I know i forgot some things but a general idea.)

Also how important do you really think history is. Its all i hear in these classes about how where we started is important for today to know where we are going. Which i think may have been true before but because of the speed and also some of the slownesses of the business you really can't gauge where we are going. if you can let me know : )

What things would you implement into it. Im not looking for you guys to do it for me cause it will get done the way i want, so i dont want no do your own homework or do what feels right posts cause its how its going to be done Im just looking for ideas that I may overlook.

Oh and mweav, goose, and spidey dont you think about reading this and not putting input in. I'll be mad :| ;)

I would do the OSI model (tcp/ip is part of the OSI model) with something like this

1-3 slides basics of the OSI
1-2 history of the OSI model
1-2 importance of OSI
1-2 with details of each layer (total of 7-14 slides)
rest- Using the OSI to troubleshoot network problems (work from physical on up)

Perhaps do a more intricate explication of the subject by doing a simultaneous history lesson / application presentation.

OSI is boring to most people. History is boring by itself sometimes too. Application is the key.

Perhaps start out talking about the development of things like toke ring, TCP/IP and applications like BBS, and coordinate your explication of their limitations/ strides based on what was available. Talk about how fiber revolutionized the amount of data that could be sent over intercontinental links. How at one point it could only transmit 16,000 calls, then 160,000 and finally, every call on the planet over one fiber using multiplexing

While you are entrenching yourself and the audience in the subject, don't alienate them. Depending on what class it is, talk about real-life applications of technology at the time, like Netscape?s navigator browser and browsing the web, etc.

Talk about for example, how these days, VoIP must use UDP and not TCP/IP and ask the rhetorical question of why this is so?

I am just throwing out ideas here, but what teachers usually want to see is not simply and understanding of the subject matter, but much more. They want to see that you know the subject matter, but have gone beyond regurgitating boring data and have taken the time to truly educate the class on a subject

Blah, blah , blah:p

Ahh so maybe implement a "Interesting fact " slide every so often that has information that links to other sites for more. I wanted it to be a pretty simple project that if you read alone you would rank up from noob as a simple power point, but I wanted to link it out to other information. Like lets say i have the word token ring I would hyperlink it to a website with a total knowledge on it(suck up).
so simply viewing the power point is the breadth(word taught to me courtesy of mweaver) of the knowledge but within the project is depth.

It is being presented but hes going to put all the PPs on a disc and give copies to the whole class. Everyone is doing something different...CPU, GPU etc. So its getting the whole knowledge behind it. I simply just want to have the best one :)

Thinking outside the box is a bad way to see it, but realize that you will put everyone to sleep except the neriest fellwos to sleep:)

Realize who your audience is, what they care about, what they do everyday, and form your presentation for them be in by drawing parallets from TCP/IP to the itunes music store, from video games to QoS.

OSI may be boring, but it's by far one of the most fundemantal concepts in networking. You have to learn it, you have to understand it, you have to see where the real world fits into it.

you should talk about emerging technologies, like 3G and BPL (Broadband over Powerlines)? Something cool to keep people interested :p

I never meant to say that it was boring....I meant to say that many people FIND it boring, so he should adjust his presentation accordingly.

OSI model is good. It is used in every facet of every network, every link, everything. without we wouldn't be able to communicate.

what to include?
Neat stuff like actual decodes of the application layer like HTTP and FTP. Show them how you can forge e-mail simply by telnetting into port 25.
