I might be moving to a swing shift and if I do, I would like to work out twice a day. Probably just Monday and Tuesday due to other obligations. I am wondering If I should run in the morning and strength train in the evening or the other way around...

Thoughts?

If you want to lose weight, it's all about diet.

What would you like to achieve by working out twice a day?

Well my diet is and will continue to be altered. But as Kevin Spacey once said "I want to look good naked"

OK, so diet is in the works. As far as workouts go...at home, at the gym? I work with a guy who goes running for a few miles in the morning & then hits the gym for strength training after work. He's pretty jacked!

How's your motivation level for exercising?

Well I run 2 miles every other day on average at work. So its pretty easy to at least run. The strength equipment is weak sauce, so I would be going to the gym. I go running with a pretty girl that I am kinda seeing so the motivation is there :)

I like to go the cardio in the morning/strength training in the evening route. I seem to feel better all day after having worked up a good sweat in the morning. My main reason for it is to keep my after work workout as short as possible though. I'm already tired after work. I'd rather not spend a significant part of my evening exercising if I can help it. If I can move the 30-45 minutes of cardio I do every day to the mornings then all I have to worry about is the 20-30 minutes of weight lifting after work. I might talk myself out of an hour plus workout in the afternoons, but I probably won't talk myself out of a 25 minute one.

I do 2 a days usually a few times a week. Be careful doing so because you're really not going to gain anything unless you're already maximized out elsewhere.

A few thoughts:
- If you're doing both cardio, and weight training, but at separate times, you likely will not see significant muscle gain since the two (and your dieting) will offset. You'll likely overall lose weight provided you keep a calorie deficit
- If doing a two a day affects your workout the next day, then you shouldn't do it. If you have good energy the next day and it doesn't affect your sleep, then it may work for you.
- Make sure not to hit the same muscle groups if you decide to weight train in both sessions. I often will do a "body-builder" style workout targeting only a few muscle groups during the day, and then in the evening will do olympic lifting / crossfit to round it out and get some cardio
- Doing cardio in the morning will usually increase your metabolic rate through most of the day, so on the whole you should have a higher resting calorie intake
