IDEA! GPS device that automatically governs car to speed limit

What does everyone think of this? I'm sure the technology already exists. Whenever a new car is manufactured, a GPS unit could be installed that is attached to sensors in the engine that automatically governs the car to exactly the speed limit in any given area. That way if the limit is 15, you can only go 15. If it is 55, only 55. This would save far more lives than all DUI laws combined...

Why has this idea not been implemented already, or discussed? Or have I just missed it?

Well, I was born in 83 and never heard of this before. So yes maybe I have been under a rock, certainly is possible.

My desire to get where I'm going faster than normal is more important to me that a few paltry lives.

There is a host of problems that this could cause. What if there was an emergency? What if you were trying to get to the hospital?

The solution to the problem is not to take the item away it is to teach people how to be responsible. The argument is kind of like take away the guns to stop murders. If you put a limiter in a car people would find a way around it.

It sounds like it might be a good idea but it is too flawed to work, humans would not go along with the idea, they like their freedom.

So you think that most fatal accidents occur due to people speeding? Can I see something to back that up?

Lesse, ignoring the massive invasion of privacy, I'm sure this would work out great for situations where, say, some gang bangers start shooting at you and you're only able to hobble away at 25 miles per because of the limiter. Or you need to get to the hospital ASAP and don't have the time/money for an ambulance. Sure, you die from massive blood loss because you hit a school zone, but knowing that this technology has saved maybe 12 lives, tops, will be of great comfort as you slip off into the final black unknown.

In most accidents speed is a factor, not a cause. Idiot drivers are perfectly capable of taking out a school bus full of innocent children while doing the speed limit.

Most governments pass out as much rope as the civilians need to hang themselves so the only real benefit of this technology would be for monitoring but not limiting. Then when it's time to renew your registration what you pay depends on how fast you drive. :Q

Oh there are plenty of other offenses to ticket for if the police wanted to.

Most likely, I'd need wirecutters. At worst, I'd need an x86 PC with a serial port. ZOMG, MY CAR IS ON THE AUTOBAHN ALL THE TIME!

Not really an invasion of privacy, but I think this is a good argument against it.

Speed is the primary reason in a LOT of fatal accidents.

Nationally, 31% of all fatal accidents

Look up some statistics...

edit: energy increases with the square of the speed... double the speed and there's 4 times as much energy in a collision. Higher speed accidents are far more likely to cause death.

I'm sure the government would have no problem using the gps to give out tickets. You speed, gps system logs the violation and you get a ticket in the mail.;)

Logic > stats.

If people are speeding, they are already breaking the law. We don't need another law.

speeding? did you even read the fricken post?

the GPS would be hooked up to the limiter so you CAN NOT SPEED. so now what tickets are they going to get?
