Idea for reducing a little bandwidth consumption

When we subscribe to a thread, we get an email everytime a new message is posted right? problem is, the link in the email goes to the first page of the thread, and I often have to go click on "Last" to get to the last page. It gets kind of annoying, and I think it would make sense to link to the last page.

What do you guys think?

"a little bandwidth consumption" is right. I doubt that it would change the overall bandwidth usage much. As for the links themselves, they're a bit subjective and depend on the user's customization settings (how many replies per page, for example). A "last" clause might be possible, I'm not familiar with the software.

I agree it would mostly reduce the user's wait time rather than bandwidth, but hey, I needed a catchy title ;)

AFAIK (but since I've never admin'd a Fusetalk server, I don't know - Zuni could probably clarify on this), there is no "last" setting for the "STARTPAGE" option that is appended to the URL of a forum message request. You'll notice on long threads in ATOT, it says page numbers as "1, 2, last" next to the thread title. However, implementing this in subscription emails would probably require lots of changes to the program code of Fusetalk, and would no doubt place a significant load on the servers and also the internal network as the web servers query the database servers for user preference information (which must be done for each and every email sent, unless some sort of intelligent caching system were designed).
Perhaps something that would save more bandwidth, would be to not send multiple subscription update emails or PMs for a single thread until the user logs in again. Yet again, this would probably necessitate large changes to Fusetalk, and I'm afraid Zuni will be stopping in shortly saying "It won't be happening" :(

I've wanted the exact same behaviour, but (as someone else pointed out) it probably requires FuseTalk changes, so unless they support it I doubt we'll see it.

Yep, that won't happen, impossible.

Paging is all dynamic, based on the forum settings, and user settings. In an email you have no way to figure out what page to go to as they change based on settings. If it was hard set and couldn't be changed it would be possible, but there would be far far far more people angry about that, than people who really care what page they land on from a subscription.

Bingo, every time I get a link with startpage=8 or something like that I cringe, 'cause unless the thread has 800+ posts I'm going to be loading blank pages until I find the end of the thread.

I agree! that would save a lot more bandwidth and a lot of my time in deleting unnecessary emails
I'm afraid to subscribe to any thread in OT anymore :p

All i know is here in PA on ADSL i have a 12-15s wait for every page, im at 1500k down / 768k up.

Something needs to be done, wherever the bottleneck is.

Damn, that's a long time. Mine are usually pretty fast, but occasionally it will 'hang' and just sit there, not downloading anything (or at least not showing anything in IE). Then I'll hit F5, and the thread will load immediately. Overall, it's something I can deal with.

Same situation here. Some people have yelled at me because they apparently haven't ever been a high school student w/o any income, but if you've ever been in that situation you'll understand why I can't subscribe, even though I'd like to subscribe. Anyway, it's not too bad for the non-subscribers, except, as you said, having to refresh the page sometimes to get stuff to load.

i'm on 1500kbps cable and AT is slloowww. but i dont whine. and i'm not paying. i could, but theres sooooo many other things i could spend that money on. if AT went to subscription-only, i'd just leave.

not to say that AT is worthless to me (look at my post count), its just not worth paying money IMO. and in between pages loading, i always have irc to keep me busy :)
