IDE vs SATA

I have a Western Digital Special Edition 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive With 8MB Buffer. My question is if i get a Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive With 8MB Buffer will there really be a noticeable performance increase? I've heard people say SATA is amazingly fast compared to IDE. However i've seen some benchmarks and they dont seem to be that much of an impressive gain. What are some people's exeriences?

Only in synthetic benchmarks except for the 10k Raptors. If you have same generation drives (and only one drive per channel on the PATA to be fair - that's the one advantage of SATA besides the more compact cabling, only one drive per channel - they could have done two per channel just like PATA - would have only needed to add one more wire to the spec for drive select...), you will only notice the diff in synthetic benchmarks.

Concur with Zepper. It is only noticeable on benchmarks - not in the real world.
