IDE Troubles

I already had: 30gig hd, cd drive, and cdrw from hp

today for christmas i got: 40gig hd, new cdrw from memorex

i just changed my setup as follows:

Primary Master: 30gig hd
Primary Slave:
Secondary Master: old cdrw, hp one
Secondary Slave: cd drive
Extra IDE: Floppy

TO THIS

Primary Master: 30 gig hd
Primary Slave: 40 gig hd
Secondary Master: new cdrw, memorex
Secondary Slave: cd drive
Extra IDE: Floppy

after changing everything, i went into CMOS and Nothing was detected besides floppy.
so i opened the PC, reseated everything, and took the slave IDE off of the 40gig -- booted up, and new cdrw and new hd were found (both masters). went into windows, cdrw wasn't reading.

I need everything to work 😛 thanks if you have any ideas you can share.

Usually happens when jumpers on devices are conflicting...recheck em (esp new drive and make sure it's set to slave)

Sounds like you're not getting the Master/Slave jumper settings correct. If you have two IDE devices on the same channel(cable), you need to set one to Master and the other to Slave. Seems like you have all devices set to either Master or Single Drive. You need to make sure those jumper settings are correct for all devices. Lookup the settings from the manufacturer's web site if you have to. Also, make sure the pin 1 on the IDE cable is turned the correct way for all devices. Seems like pin 1 goes toward the power connector for all IDE devices I've seen.

thanks a bunch, i am changing it now, now i will be changing it to slave, but i have two options for jumper configurations -- 32GB Clip or Auto spin disable? thanks

thanks... harddrives are all fine and detected now... but now i have cd problems

after looking in the manual, it says that the Memorex CDRW drive has to be master, and set the other cd drive to slave. i did that -- the jumpers for both cd drives are set, but when i boot up the PC, only Primaries are detected (hdds), but neither cd is detected.

maybe i have to swap where the two cd drives are connected to the IDE cables?

i currently have this:

Motherboard ----------------- master ------------- slave

does it HAVE to be the following instead?

Motherboard ----------------- Slave --------------- master

i dont know what to do, after trying to get everything working, i have opened and closed and connected the PC about 10 times now, and i'm getting tired 😛 please offer any advice if you can. many thanks to those who helped above.

Don't listen to the manual. All manuals will suggest that you set their device as the master. Why? Because it will reduce the number of problems with their drive and make it look like other drives are the problem. What you should do is set each HDD as the master on a different chain. The HDDs will be more sensitive to the lack of available bandwidth than CDRW drives. If you have burn-proof technology you should be totally fine. Even if not, I was burning CDs while my CDRW was a slave for a long time without ever burning a coaster. I don't have burn-proof technology, and I multitasked plenty while burning CDs.

thanks 😀 ill give it a shot now.... do you have any ideas as far as which HDD i should combine with which CD?

hdds:
30gb 7200rpm old one
40gb 7200rpm new one, clean, for linux (i prolly wont be burning cds with linux)

cds:
regular cd drive
cdrw, new one

I guess the CDRW drive should go on the primary chain, but it doesn't really matter. Just make sure your bootable HDD is the primary master.

really doesnt matter, some games will require the game cd to be in the "first" cd drive (by letter) so perhaps best to but the cdrom as primary slave and cdrw as secondary slave. I'd guess you'd want your "best" HDD as primary master running your "main" OS.

thanks, got everything working! 😀 thanks everyone! now to bug people in the OS forum as i install the dual boot with w2k/rh8
