i have a 2.6 p4, 1gb ram....

and a 200gb seagate ide drive

would i notice any difference in upgrading to a 250gb sata 16mb cache

or a 74 gb raptor?

Yes you would, but not because of the interface, it'd be because your drive is an older design with all the problems that go with it.

You'd also see a massive difference if you were to reinstall windows or defag the HD.

would the 74gb raptor be faster or the wd 250gb 16mb cache?, storage is not that big of a concern as i have a seperate drive to house dvd rips

i think a 74 raptor would be a bit faster depending...i have a 400 gb that isnt bad i mean i dont notice the 2ms extra of seek time

the raptor would be a bit faster, but it's not a huge difference, check out storagereview.com they have a performance database there you should have a look at.

coming from a P4 2.6C 800mhz, 1gb pc3200, would it be worth it to upgrade to the new dual core chips and ddr2?

i havnt been following the new hardware coming out recently, i would have about an 700 dollar budget do upgrade

Worth it? That's up to you. But the performance difference would be substantial. AMD are best for gaming hands down and Intel can just about match AMD but that's about all.
