IDE raid?

I'm building a new machine with a 45Gb IBM Deskstar. If I spent more and had two 20Gb drives in raid 0(I think thats the one with data stipping), would I notice a decent speed difference? I'm not sure if the added cost of two drives is worth whatever increased performance I might see?

what exactly do you do on your computer? if it's just daily routine stuff such as web browsing, e-mail, word processing, you might not notice any change at all. aside from the occasional copy of a humongous file or something. in games, you might not notice too big of a difference either. I have a RAID, and the only difference I see in gaming is loading those huge save game files in Deus Ex. It might load games faster, but not sure.

The most intensive thing that I would be doing is spending way too amny hours gaming. Other than that Word, Excel, surfing, and some light Java and C stuff. So your saying I really wouldn't notice a difference overall?

You probably wouldn't notice too much of difference for what you do then, other than having the programs load faster. I've got a similar setup and all I know is I get into windows faster, I don't do too much vid/photo editing.

Besides, IDE RAID wastes CPU cycles.
Unless you have a really fast CPU and you do stuff that uses huge files like Multimedia editing RAID's not really worth it.

If you got enough RAM hopefully your games don't touch disk once they are done loading, or at least not very much.

The only thing you'll see is slightly faster load times....
not worth it in my view.

And if you are serious about IDE RAID...why not do it right?
3Ware Escalade 3W-6400 RAID Controller Get some hardware RAID 😉

Heheh seriously though IDE RAID is just a fad...for most people it's not terribly useful.
